Can all of you pompous people before you get off saying my son didn't learn anything... Ask Why? Why in other states are teachers better? Figure it out? It is a no brainer complainer.

Are teachers in other states really "better"? That's a good question, but in other states they are paid more, have less students, etc. However, students in Utah (at least according to the news) seem to still be among the best 10 states in graduation rates, scores, etc. This topic is confusing. I wonder if teachers had better conditions (class size, pay, respect) here in utah if we'd just blow education out of the water here!!

Curriculum is different in other states. They may be more advanced in some areas, and lagging in others.

Teacher shortages will continue to get worse so long as the school districts continue to spend money on administrators, counsellors, and other non-teacher personnel and activities.

The Districts are too top-heavy and administrators need to be cut by around 30-40%.

Counsellors add no value to the educational process, and should be cut by at least 60-70%.

to Moved from Utah:
I experiencedthat each time my family moved to a new school system. I think any time you change school systems, it can happen. Sometimes they had subjects that were ahead (math) and othertimes it was like repeating the previous years studies (English)

I don't know where your "home state" is But what are the salaries and conditions? Please factor that before ripping Utahs' educational system a new one. Why are you such a part of the problem, instead of the solution? Always complaining , but never fixing.
Teachers and Prison Guards | 2:05 p.m. Nov. 19, 2007
I also saw in another article that we have a crisis with our prison guards making a whopping $14 an hour to guard our state's worst. They are stressed out and leaving this profession.

What are the connections between this and teacher pay?

This state is cheap and better come to terms by increasing pay for state employees including prison guards, police officers, fire fighters and TEACHERS or they will lose these people to other professions leaving the very fabric of our society in dire straights.

By going cheap with education those in the state can ensure undereducated people can continually fill those prison and jail cells to be guarded by underappreciated and underpaid workers.

Utah needs more options.
Class size needs to be limited to less than 15 students per class in all grades and all schools. This would remove many of the behavior and teaching problems educators now face.
If we increase the sales tax to pay for more teachers, better pay AND the smaller class size, then the public system might have a chance. Sales tax increase would spread the burden more equitably and allow us to use money from visitors of our state to contribute. We could make better use of the schools we have now by teaching in shifts. A 6am to noon and noon to 6pm would cut class size in half.
