Everyone is acting surprised at what Whit did? Are ya'' serious?
Come on, this is the yewts we're talking about, and classess is their way
of thinking. Class simply is not in their vocabulary (probably because
it's not vulgur, crude or obscene) and anyone who was surprised by
Whit's classless act is living in lala land.
Plain and simple, Whit was piling it on and running up the score, which is nothing short of pathetic when you're up 43-0. It's one thing to continue scoring if the other team simply cannot stop you, but to keep on scoring through trick plays and onside kicks is a joke.
I used to like Whit and thought he was a good guy, but no more. He's as classless as any yewt.

Who is convinced by this (lie) statement? You had already done the damage before the fourth quarter! You ran more gadget plays than a flag football team, many after you were miles ahead. It looks like you just can't say I'm sorry and leave it at that.

The reason why the utes did so many unusual thing after securing the win on
saturday was for future games. It was a smart strategic move on the part of the
coaches. Now UNM and BYU will have to spend extra practice time preparing for
those things. I'm sure it was part of the gameplan to show those plays no
matter what the score was. The onside kick was also part of the plan, now the
kick return teams will not be as effective because they will have to stay and
make sure the ball is kicked deep. Kyle probably should have called off the
kick but I understand what was going on.

I am one that was very disappointed when KW turned down BYU. Like thousands of
others, over the last three seasons I have come to be more and more grateful
that he did. He really taught his players some valuable life lessons on
Saturday!! Not only did BYU get the better coach, they got the better man!

I watched a lot of the game and lost even more respect for Whittingham. Wyoming
is hurting right now, if you remember San Diego State outscored Wyoming 27-3 and
racked up over 250 yards in just a little over two quarters. Fake punts, flea
flickers and on-side kicks equals classless. The excuse that Wyoming might come
back, right, they haven't had much offense all year long.

I just realized, Edwards was never classless. Running the score up wasn't a problem for him. Because when he beat opponents soundly, his third and fourth strings were in. And he just asked his players to play hard and use those games to get better, so it would pay off when they faced a tough opponent. He didn't do it out of spite to settle a vendetta.
Never mind! We're justified! Call me classless Ute, if you want to. Everyone disrespects us. Oh well, we need a chip on our shoulders so we can ride this emotion against BYU.

Great game coach!! I have always been a believer in taking it to um!! Never
let up. This is not little league where we try to teach our kids respect and
give everyone a chace to play. This is college ball and big wins make for big

Just because Utah only scored 10 points in the second have doesn't mean
they didn't try to score more. Glenn was in the wrong and Whittingham was
in the wrong. The actions of one doesn't excuse the other. I'm
confused by anyone who thinks how Whittingham handled the situation was anything
but classless. Teaching character to his players is obviously not very high on
his list of priorities--certainly not high enough.

In football, the only classy thing to do is score on your opponent and stop them
from scoring. I'd say utah outclassed everyone (except bsu) last
saturday.
Besides, the utes did them a favor, wyoming got the ball at the utah 40 yard line, do you think they could have gotten there on their own. nope. coach glen should have been thanking him for the charity.

As a hard core Cougar fan and one who despises the Utes I will say the onside
kick made me laugh. Good one Kyle, after Glenns promise of a win he deserved to
get spanked. Wyoming is done, they will roll over for BYU. Thanks Utes for
spanking them so hard that they are way in the pits now. See you on Nov. 24th.

classless than anything Whit did during regulation.

Coaches really have every right to call the plays they want and when they want. Exploiting a weakness in a team - no matter how many others you have exploited already - is the game of football.
When you stop playing football - no matter what the score - that's when you start losing games.
Wyoming - As well as everyone in the MWC - needs to learn that the big teams NEVER let up. Look at the pouncings they put on the "little guys" year after year.
Comparitively, letting up would be like Tiger Woods being 20 under par on the 9th hole and paring the last 9. Or a runner slowing up before the finish line because he is too far ahead of the others.

After watching the game I just hope that Whit. kept some trick plays for BYU. I
don't think eberyone should jump all over Whit. I think Wyoming was a good
team to practice an onside kick against, wel may need it someday.
The best part of the day was when a cornerback for the pokes got on T.V. whinning about how they ran up the score. Seriously kid it is your job to stop them, come on have some self respect don't cry becasue mercy wasn't granted by the U's second team O.

SMU had a big lead in the forth quarter with only a few min left in the game?

I attend the U but work in Wyoming during the summers. Pokes fans are the worst
fans in the entire country. They have no respect for the other teams players
even their own.
They talk more trash after a losing season than Cougar or Ute fans do after an 10 win season.
I loved than onside kick. Great game Utes. If I was the coach I would of put in my scout team and kept running my normal offense just to show the pokes that Utah's 1st and 2nd teams can whoop'em.
Finally, I have a hard time saying this but...I hope BYU goes into Laramie and hangs 60 on'em right in front of the pokes sale-out crowd!!

I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Cougar fan but it seems to me that memories can be
very short. Remember how mad the Air Force Coach was when Crowton did the
on-side kick early in the game against the Falcons some years ago? It is not a
matter of being classless or running up the score. It is a matter of observing
that the players on the opposing team drop back way early and very rapidly to
set up a run back on kick off. It is a matter of good strategy and taking
advantage of a weakness the other team exposes. Congratulations Utes. I
didn't see any "easing up" by Wyoming last year. In fact, it
seemed to me that Coach Glen was rather gleeful after the Cowboys hammered the
Utes.

These people upset at Coach KW make me sick. This is football, not girls ping
pong. Glen needed to be taught a lesson, for opening up his mouth. Football is
a game of emotion. If Wyoming didn't want Utah to run up the score and
dominate. Maybe they should have played defense and special teams fundamentals.
The onside kick just gave wyoming better field position. Give me Coach Whitt

The really shouldn't be a big deal about the whole guarantee. How many
times each week are there guarantees made all across the nation at pep rallies.
It happens all the time. The difference here is the Utes heard about it. Big
deal. Get over it. Is Joe Glenn supposed to say we're going to go in there
and play pretty hard, but I think we'll get beat? It's his job to get
the troops riled up, and what was said is said each and every week. Get over it!

It takes a big man to admit his mistakes. A lot of guys would get defensive in
the face of the onslaught Whitt has suffered the past few days. But instead of
stubbornly digging in his heels, Whitt listened to the criticism, reassessed his
decision and issue a mea culpa. It's impossible to have a perfect football
coach, so I'll take a coach that can honestly reflect on his decisions and
try to learn from mistakes. It's been fun to watch the Utes the last
several weeks. Whitt has pulled about 5/8ths of a rabbitt out of his hat. I
can't wait to see if he can get the whole rabbitt out.

Classless. An onside kick while up 43 points??? If Belicheat had done this, the
national media would be up in arms. Coach W has just lost his right to EVER
complain when the other team runs up the score. Couldn't even muster a real

The onside kick resulted in Wyoming having the best field position in the game.
Glenn should have thanked Whit. And his team should have used that as motivation
to not get blanked.

The score is not the issue. Neither are the trick plays. The Utes were clearly
the better team. Glad he showed they have some tricks so there will be fewer
surprises in Provo. The issue is the onside kick -- which is usually used to try
to break open a close game or to launch a comeback attempt. Not to punish the
oponent because their coach is dumb. It (the onside kick) creates a short field
-- if executed successfully.
The flying finger is also classless, so you have 2 classless head coaches. Usually it's the assistants who are sometimes immature, not the ehad guy. I personally don't see anything wrong with Joe Glenn's pre-game comments other than they were stupid. They certainly didn't strike me as disrespectful. Oh well

Who does not like to watch gadget plays? Will anybody argue that this year's fiesta bowl with Boise state and Oklahoma wasn't one of the most entertaining games ever? Remember the Stobart years and 5 yards and a cloud of dust? Utah was lucky to get 13,000 fans in the stands, all the while the TDS was sold out while putting on their arial circus. Hats off to Whit and Andy Ludwig for putting on a show! I for one am begging for more.

Stop saying they ran up the score. Whitt was just practicing an onside kick
because the game was already in hand. He might not have been thinking when he
did it, but they were just practicing it for the New Mexico and BYU games. They
haven't done one onside kick all year, and that was the perfect time to do
it if you think about it. Plus how did they run up the score by only scoring ten
points, what do you expect them to do, lay down and let WYOMING COME BACK AND
WIN IN THE 2ND HALF. everyone needs to stop overreacting to this because
it's not that big of a deal!

Wyoming Classless? Did you actually watch the game? The finger gesture was a
reaction to Whit's totally tasteless game plan. No one ever said Wyoming
was a class act. They are Wyoming. Utah is supposed to be a classy organization.
Trick plays after game was well in hand? Fake punt when up 26-0? Onside kick up
43-0? Surprised they didn't go for 2 points after each touchdown. The
backlash against the Utes for being so classless will continue beyond this game.
Not just form Y fans. That is to be expected. The kids watching this will get
into their minds that Utes don't have class. Those type of things stick as
they choose where to play their sports careers. Even my long time Ute fan
neighbors are embarrased about this one.

I'm a BYU fan but I don't hold this against Coach Whittingham. There
are two teams on the field and both are responsible for a lopsided score. If the
Cowboys didn't want to be embarrassed by the score they should have played
better. Maybe there should be a "skunk rule" or "mercy rule"
like in ping-pong. If a team gets up by 40 points the game ends. Barring that I
have no problem with the Utes scoring as many points as they can. Question - did
Wyoming take out their first string and stop playing as hard as they could? Why
should the winning team stop trying while the losing team continues to try hard?
Finally, remember that this is just a game, not life and death. All that said, I
hope the cougars can run up the score against the utes.

I find it interesting that people can be so negative about a person they have
never met. Coach Whit is one of the most genuine classy people I have ever had
the privilage to be around. When it is game day he is there to win, which by
the way is just what he is paid to do. And to the coach who commentted earlier
that he would no longer reccommend the U to his players: Oh if we could all be
as perfect as you!!! Grow up, sounds to me as if you weren't pushing the U
very hard in the first place.

As a Utah transplant, all this U vs. Y banter kills me. I hail from Oregon,
where the real college Civil War resides, and while there are extremists on each
side, reason and objectiveness rarely takes a backseat to blatant homer-ism for
your team.
I think the real story is how ridiculous Y fans are for calling Whitt "bush-league at best" when all he's doing is securing a win for his team with a whole half of football left to play! Get over yourselves, Cougs. Don't worry, I have plenty against the BYU homers too, but in this case Cougar fans need to realize that you don't win games and you ultimately let your players & fanbase down by "letting up" at inappropriate times. Anyone see what Manning and Indie did inthe Colts/Chargers game last night...in less than one quarter? The game is never over in collegiate and professional sports.

There was nothing to prove. The game was in the bag. Somebody talked about class
earlier and Whittingham has none. Honestly people, if you were a Wyoming coach

Next point. Everyone out there saying that Utah is classless for running up the score should look back to the Lavell days. Happened week in and week out. Not to mention that Wyoming had the 6th best defense in the nation going into that game. This was not an Eastern Washington opponent. We removed all starters with 12 minutes left in the 4th quarter. Bronco doesn't pull his any sooner.

How ironic all the BYU fans in here are talking about class when LaVell Edwards
used to re-insert players like Marc Wilson to break NCAA records in games when
BYU was winning by huge margins.

I'm disturbed by all of the people piling on Coach Whittingham over this.
I agree that it was an ill-advised decision, but he doesn't deserve this
vitriol. Nothing against Bronco, but I'm one who still wishes Kyle would
have taken the BYU job. I hated it when his dad jumped ship to the U and took
the rest of the family with him. I'd like to see Kyle back at his alma
mater.

First, let me state that I am a true blue BYU fan and long-time season ticket
holder. That said, I'd like to congratulate the Utes for their great
victory, and Kyle Whittingham for a beautifully coached game, INCLUDING the
onsides kick. I would've done exactly the same thing, because the funny
thing is this: It's actually the job of the OTHER TEAM'S DEFENSE to
prevent my team from scoring. I just don't understand why a coach should
deny his own players a great moment for the tender FEELINGS of his opponent.
Aren't they all D1 football players, or did I just stumble into a stadium
of romper-room play buddies? It's nonsense. Furthermore, a struggling
team can only learn when the weaknesses in their preparation/execution are
exposed. If a coach calls off the dogs, tactical learning ends for the losing
team at that moment. So, to the victor I say, "Play on!" And to the
loser I say, "Fight harder, then learn from what you've seen!"

I have admired Joe Glen from afar from his days at Montana and N Colorado and
wish he would�ve ended up in SLC or Logan some day. He just
seems like a down to earth, intense, rebel of a coach. Which make his guarantee
no big surprise. My only disappointment was when asked about the finger, he
didn�t respond � I was checking the
wind for a possible field goal�. That would have been
classic.

According to byu fans and the local media, you are classless for running the imfamaous on-side kick. I believe you are sincere when you say that you made a mistake. I felt at the time it should not have been run. Coach Whit did exactly what should have been done, what is this good
sportsmanship? College football is not little leage anymore... College football
and professional footbal do differ but not by much when it comes to the coaching
style. You play to win, and you do not quit playing especially in the 3rd
quarter.
This is part of the game, if you are not coaching your team to the best of your abilities you better be able to take it when you get trashed up and down the field.
Football is pretty much a job for these athletes so when they are trained to do what they did they will not quit and same goes for the coach. I agree there is such thing as class in sports but after a "guarantee" what would you do? Lay down in the 3rd and act like we are playing backyard two hand touch? Not likely, you would run the score up on your little brother like the Utes did to the Cowboys.

Sorry to say folks, last year when Wyoming got 35 points they BACKED OFF! Utah
poured it on continously through the third quarter, ON SIDE KICK at 43-0? What,
fake punt at 33-0 wasn't it? Hook & ladder with a huge lead too? The
forward handoff through the legs was brilliant, the lead wasn't that huge
yet, so that was an awesome play, but the trouncing should have backed off at
40-0, and put in the back ups, or at least went to a steady running game without
all the long pass plays and trickery which continued. IT WAS DISGRACEFUL! Enough
said. Wittingham has been bashed by my wet noodle with 40 lashes and I am done
with it, I hope every game they play the rest of the year has this last game
remembered by the other team as if it was done to them, that might teach Kyle a
lesson in what the Coaches Conduct and Ethic Code is all about! It was totally
uncalled for, with that aside, nice game Utes.

I think it's blatantly stupid how people turned this onside kick call into
an attack on Whittingham as a person; I'm a student at the Y and find it
disgusting how Cougars fans are attacking the rival's coach for making a
call that has no effect on them. This is not a BYU-Utah matter, it's a
Wyoming-Utah matter. Whittingham apologized. I've lived in Ann Arbor and
been a part of the Michigan-OSU rivalry, and THIS is classlessness: OSU coach
Woody Hayes, with his team leading by 34 points, went for two against Michigan.
When asked why, he said, "Because we couldn't go for three."
I'm sure BYU fans wouldn't be that upset with a 50-0 win over the
Cowboys this Saturday, even if an onside kick was involved. Stop demonizing the
rival for what they do to other teams.
