Salt Lake City and the entire state of Utah are gradually becoming more progressive, which means we need to learn how to get along. Perhaps we could all take a cue from Mayor-elect Becker and learn to be more cooperative with those whose political and philosophical beliefs differ from our own.

P.S. Squatter's is a restaurant, not a bar.
Glad I moved | 2:30 p.m. Nov. 7, 2007
It's reading comments like this that remind me why I moved from SLC. Raised there my whole life, but the division between mormon/non-mormon and republican/democrat became too much. People in Salt Lake need to stop fighting eachother and start appreciating eachother. I think Ralph Becker will be the best canidate for bringing Salt Lake together.
NON MORMON | 2:32 p.m. Nov. 7, 2007
I'm not a mormon, but I've always felt like I was accepted here. My neighbors know I'm not going to change, but they still love me for who I am. I came from Mass. and was apprehensive on coming to Utah for that very reason, but I've found that Mormons are for the most part great, hard working people. Both sides should just quit bashing each other! We're all here on earth together.

Let the village idiot leave office now, instead of January, maybe its time that SLC gets a real mayor.

MAYBE THE FIRST TIME IN is lying about his son. Squatters, like any other Utah restaurant liquor licensee, has no age requirement to enter.

Lets turn the great city of Salt Lake to what it needs to be! Lets get some nightlife in this city! Hopefully his liberalist views do more than did the views of Rocky, lets turn Salt Lake into an actual city, and leave the family cities to the suburbs. We need more tourism, more business, and more out of state dollars streaming through our city. Lets do what it takes and get it done!

The most important issue for SLC is the environment, is pushing the city (and the state) to be more green, toward sustainability, and Becker is definitely the right choice. While Mr. Buhler seems like a nice guy, like most Utah republicans, he's not awake. We have a long, tough road to hoe. With some leadership we might actually get somewhere.

"voters unhappy with national Republicans, especially President Bush"
Bingo!
Anyone else see the irony? | 4:03 p.m. Nov. 7, 2007
"Re: John
Thanks for letting everyone know how close minded you are. Squatters is a great restaurant. Good job on keeping up the sterotype of mormons being judgemental.

It would be great if you could move south to Utah County."

I'm not so sure this person understands what "stereotypes" or "close minded" [sic]mean. It's pretty hard to claim you are not judgmental when you just made a blanket statement about 500,000 people.
Jeff, you're right. | 4:11 p.m. Nov. 7, 2007
First Time In is not telling the truth. I was at the Victory Party last night and there were quite a few kids in tow.

So the fact that an adult son (although under 21) couldn't get in, just doesn't make sense. No door checker, no age restriction on entry.
I hope it's not an omen . . . | 4:47 p.m. Nov. 7, 2007
. . .that he was celebrating his victory at a bar . . .

Jerry | 4:51 p.m. Nov. 7, 2007
My bishop told me to stay away from liberals. Downtown is thus not a place I frequent. The liberal vote has been cast. The end times are near.
Hey Jerry, | 5:11 p.m. Nov. 7, 2007
Laughing out loud . . .
So long Rocky | 5:13 p.m. Nov. 7, 2007
Religion shouldn't have anything to do with it. All i have to say is thank goodness Rocky is gone and someone with a desire to do the right thing for the people might actually be in office.
what's in a name | 6:20 p.m. Nov. 7, 2007
So you went from Rocky to Becker? Sylvester Stallone to Ted Danson?
dennis | 6:20 p.m. Nov. 7, 2007
Jerry is typical.
Sadly typical.
But if he can't find solace from his bishop, he can always find it on The Rush Limbaugh Show.

People who insist that their shouldn't be such a split and head-butting between mormonists and anti-mormonists are suggesting the impossible. The fact of the matter is that Salt Lake City has become a hot bed of the culture war. As the progressives increasingly win out this culture war is going to spread to all of Salt Lake County. Only those with their heads in the sand will genuinely believe that the progressives aren't destined to win--the tide of history has been with them since the abolition of slavery, desegregation, the birth of feminism and the birth of the gay rights movement which is on the precipice of great victories. Vitriolic statements from conservatives only proves this further--the dog wails, barks and bites when he is backed into a corner--but he is on his death bed.

DING DONG THE WITCH IS GONE, THE WICKED WITCH IS GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!
To Dennis: | 6:44 p.m. Nov. 7, 2007
Dennis needs to be more specific. Jerry is typical of what? Jerry is likely someone just trying to paint LDS people in a bad way. No LDS bishop would or could make a statement like that without getting into trouble. Also, what does Rush Limbaugh have to do with anything? I've read a number of comments mentioning Rush Limbaugh, and none of them from the conservative commentators. Seems like liberals pay more attention to him than conservatives. Let's all just get along. Good luck Becker, make SLC great.
To Jerry: | 6:51 p.m. Nov. 7, 2007
I am very active LDS and you embarass me. Are we not all God's children? Lets love one another. I have great Liberal and Conservative friends. I know that the LDS Church is not the only one with Bishops in their churches...I sure hope your Bishop is not LDS because he needs some fine tuning on his doctrine if he is. Maybe your Stake President should be made aware of the false doctrine (stay away from liberals) being taught.
Ken | 7:14 p.m. Nov. 7, 2007
Mr. Becker stated last night that he will bring people together when his very liberal beliefs favor only one group of individuals? Maybe he will have the courage to tell us how he will accomplish this proposal.
Jerry | 12:18 a.m. Nov. 8, 2007
The fact that most of the voting stations were located near coffee shops or bars clearly tilted the election results towards a liberal candidate.
Sheesh.... | 2:10 p.m. Nov. 8, 2007
OK guys, maybe some of you don't blog or read the comments that often, but I think its pretty obviuos that Jerry is a joker and loves a little irony.

I got a good laugh out of both of Jerry's comments.

That sort of humor is a more common on the Provo paper's website where you always use the same screen name. The Desnews is just getting started and you can change your screen name, so there really isn't a "community feel" on the message board.

Unless I'm the one who got you wrong, I say stick around Jerry!
