Free lunch: Pioneer Park a 'political hot potato'

If I remember correctly, when the Gateway was built the developers offered to move the food kitchen and also build transitional housing at a different location, but some human rights organizations threatened to sue over discrimination against the homeless. I was stunned they wouldn't allow it to happen.

Bravo! Finally a person brave enough to suggest that the homeless shelter be moved. I've always thought it ridiculous that the city continues to develop the west side without cleaning up Pioneer Park. The shelter is clearly overcrowded so why not build a bigger one somewhere else? Thank you, Mr. Capener, for stating the obvious solution that politicians continue to ignore!

Where do you move the homeless shelter to? No one wants it in their neighborhood. I would say move it out by Jordan River Parkway....because next to Pioneer Park and Liberty Park....thats where all the homeless hang out...but then it would no longer be safe to bike or rollerblade that wonderful trail! So where do you put them?

I see my earlier comments didnï¿½t get past the censure, so Iï¿½ll try again. The dismal state of two beautiful parks, Pioneer Park and Liberty Park, are the legacy of Mayor Pebble Anderson. With his policies that encourage addicts and criminals to congregate in those parks, what do you expect but crime, drugs, addicts, and those who by their chosen lifestyles have become societyï¿½s refuse?

Having worked near Pioneer Park, I have seen firsthand the problems residents and business owners deal with. It has definitely gotten worse. I agree that the homeless shelter should be moved. The writer is right in that no politician will touch this issue, and that's sad. The homeless definitely need our help. But we can't expect commerce and neighborhoods to flourish the way things are now.

I have a great idea, lets have the city buy a bus and then once a week we can round up the homeless and send them to Las Vegas. Solution solved SLC.
