Becker, Buhler debate booze

more booze | 7:32 a.m. Oct. 30, 2007
I thought the era of more booze will solve all the
citys ills was on its was out with
Rocky. As for making downtown more welcoming for all, making booze more
available will make downtown less welcoming for many. Im
disappointed with both candidates; Im disappointed that
they are the best the city can do.

Can get it anywhere | 8:32 a.m. Oct. 30, 2007
More booze, I agree, more booze won't solve all the city's ills. What
the candidate are proposing is to treat people like adults. I have always been
taught to "Teach correct principals and let them govern themselves".
That is the whole point to free agency. People can get booze anywhere and
having a statute that allows more than 2 establishment within a blocks face to
have a liquor lisence doesn't necessarily mean making more booze available,
its providing an opportunity for people to make their own decisions and choices.
Restaurants or clubs can offer it if they want. The opportunity allows for
people to gather. If they gather, they spend money on food, theatre, shopping,
museums, etc. All the city would be doing is allowing people a choice for
themselves instead of chosing for them. You cant stop people from
drinking....you can only make it more difficult. Why would anyone want to
control the actions or actions of anyone else.

I hate to break it to you, but SLC is thankfully becoming more and more non-LDS.
I say let's allow as many drinking establishments as there are Mormon
churches.

I have now seen Ralph Becker debate Buhler a couple of times now and all I have
to say is that Becker has the personality of a rock. That man needs a
personality.

It has nothing to do with "booze will solve all the city's ills."
It has to do with the proper roll of government. The way it's set up now is
nothing more than socialism. Government should not be making these decisions for
us. We are more than capable of making them ourselves.

"Let's treat people like adults." If that is the battle cry of
both candidates then why doesn't the City agressively prosecute and jail
adults who buy and then give alcohol to minors who then kill innocent people
with their intoxicated driving or die of alcohol poisoning? All of these
terrible tragedies have occured right here in Salt Lake City. If adults want to
drink this stuff then fine but if they break the law by giving it to minors they
should be kicked around the block several times. I am really disappointed in
both candidates for not standing up for better enforcement of existing laws.

I thought | 5:42 p.m. Oct. 30, 2007
I thought that the liquor laws were state laws, not city ordinances. So what
does Becker want Buhler to do about state law?
