MWC holding own vs. BCS teams

I just moved here from the east. All the fans of conferences out here, MWC, WAC,
etc... need to pull together because you get no love from fans of the Big 10,
SEC, etc ... I'm more used to Big 10 fans, they're particularly snubby
to, well, any team from another conference that wins lots of games. I hope for
any team out here to "Bust the B(C)S" and force the NCAA to rethink
its system.
The more "traditional" teams are given favor because of their names and how long they've been around while "upstart" teams that don't have that tradition are looked down upon, it doesn't matter if they're actually good and capable of being a national championship team. Everyone loves to play the schedule card too. If a team that's not my team or in my team's favorite conference is undefeated, they must not play any good teams.
I'm really tempted to make a certain analogy but I won't. Go mid-majors!

The point of the article was to discuss the strengths of the MWC. If you're
going to talk trash on Utah, do it in an article that discusses BYU football.

Boise State would not be good for the MWC, the only thing they have going for them is football.
BYU will not be extended an invitation to join a BCS conference because of their lack of research, private affiliation, and no games on sunday. Just ain't gonna happen, common knowledge.
Utah may eventually be invited to join the PAC-10 if they ever expand but that wont happen anytime soon.
The Mtn television is terrible. Even if you do get to see the game, the picture is poor and they have like 2 cameras at the game.
The MWC is playing good football this year overall but the best in the MWC would be middle of the pac in a BCS conference. We are just a bunch of average teams (yes cougars even you, especially you) and we are, accurately, viewed that way in the rest of the nation.

BSU WOULD be a good addition BECAUSE of their football, which is much better than some MWC teams. Their other sports are about as good as many MWC teams.
BYU does have research programs (don�t you ever read non-sports news?), private affiliation is not a factor, and Sunday games can be worked around.
If Utah is invited to join the PAC-10 then most likely BYU will be invited at the same time because of their association and rivalry. Look at the rivalries in the PAC-10: USC-UCLA, WA-WA St, Ore-Ore St, Stanford-Cal, Az-Az St.

People in Utah county get a clue....no way BYU gets into the PAC10 with or
without Utah.....it will never happen...maybe the Big 12 someday but not the
PAC-10

I'm sure Stanford, Washington, Wazzu and Arizona would all roll out the
Crimson Carpet also for Utah.

I don't know, I still think the PAC-10 could be a possibility for BYU
although I agree the Big 12 might be more agreeable for them. But doesn't
the Big 12 already have approximately, oh let's say just for
argument's sake, 12 teams? Will they ever want to add more teams than
that?
And since the PAC part of PAC-10 stands for "Pacific" and they seem to have mostly stuck with teams whose states have ocean front property along the ocean whose name their conference bears (exceptions: Az and Az St), why would they want to come so far inland to pick up either BYU or Utah? Instead maybe they'll go with San Diego State or Fresno St or Hawaii. And then when those schools start getting boatloads of BCS money they will be able to build research facilities and recruit better athletes to be more competitive in the PAC-12 and nationally. Just a thought.

Yes, '84 BYU beat a mediocre Michigan team, but only because no other
higher ranked team would come. Many were invited, but plead other bowl
commitments (ie-higher payouts. Never mind that the score is nowhere near
indicative of how thoroughly BYU thumped Michigan. Look up the game stats - BYU
steamrolled them. But BYU did prove it next year against the #2 finisher in 84,
Washington, by the score of 30-3. And that was with both teams returning most of
their squad from the previous year.
And yes, the '04 Utes were the first to crack the BCS. But one could argue that they never would have gotten the chance were it not for the '96 Cougars--#5 in the nation, and ignored by the then Bowl Alliance--and the '01 squad--at the time 12-0, and told by the BCS that no matter how they finished they would not be taken. Never mind that they choked in their final 2 games - they were completely written off by the BCS before it happened. Those two teams were a major (not sole) cause of the uproar that induced restructuring to make it easier for a non-BCS team to finally break in. Thanks BYU.

to get into a BCS bowl game. It's still a sore spot for me that the BCS
told BYU "we release you from your BCS bowl obligations" when the
Cougars reached the 12-0 mark. I was thinking excuse me? You "release"
us? What the blankity blank makes you think we want to be released?!! I think it
was soon after that incident that LaVelle testified before a Senate committee
investigating BCS anti-trust.
I do, however, disagree with you saying the Cougars choked in their final 2 games. Their key starters on offense were injured going into the Hawaii game. Doman & Mahe played injured and Luke Staley was out thanks to a fat Miss St player falling on his outstretched lower leg. Nice tackling technique by the way, Miss St. If you can't grab the guy then just roll onto his legs to take him out. Of course that only explains part of the let down against Hawaii since special teams and defense did lousy that game. Then they did better in their bowl game but still lost.

They refer to those teams as BCS teams because their conference is a BCS
conference, not because they are likely to play in a BCS bowl.

Please!! VA lost to WY (not one of the MWC leaders this year), and they are
leading the ACC. Utah is undefeated against the Big East in all of history!!
It took Wisconsin the last 2 minutes of their game against UNLV to beat UNLV by
7. Please note than UNLV is the MWC cellar dweller. The MWC has better bowl
records than many of the BCS conferences. In a play-off of the top 8 teams, you
will probably see a MWC team at least once every 2-3 years! That is why there
are no playoffs. They know they could end up giving a championship to a MWC or
WAC team!

Please!! BYU was picked to be #1 or #2. That is not a rebuilding year. Oh,
and the talk that you are the best thing since "sliced bread" is also
sickening. BYU has two losses to TULSA and UCLA! That is SAD!! They
haven't played TCU, WY, or Utah, and they just barely squeaked a win over
NM! To say that BYU is so much superior to the rest of the conference is a
joke! If you were undefeated, I'd still say it would be dangerous based
on the fact that you still have a hard part of the schedule to hoe, but at least
you could brag based on an undefeated schedule! You're not undefeated, so
keep quiet, or enjoy the crow you will obviously eat after the Utah game.

Oh please! If somebody went undefeated when BYU won the championship, BYU
would not have won the championship! Respect the fact that without a
championship, we truly don't know who the real champion is. BYU deserves
their championship in that they went undefeated and nobody else did, but they
weren't exactly convincing. I still think Utah would've won the 2004
championship if there was a playoff. Something, I'm not so certain about
the year BYU won the championship since they struggled against a bad Michigan
team that year!

Umh, Oregon State and Michigan both sound pretty tough compared to Washington,
AZ, and UCLA. Course it is all relative. Nobody knows how these teams are
going to rate from year to year. Imagine everybody Utah played were rated like
they were last year. Oregon State, UCLA, TCU, Louisville, and BYU were all
ranked last year. Louisville, TCU, and UCLA were ranked this year. They just
aren't ranked anymore.

Great point! The other conferences are trying to achieve an illusion of
grandeur. This is why there are no playoffs. We would be able to see who were
the true good teams through the smoke and mirrors if there was a playoff. Why
does a mid-level team make it to the final 4 almost year after year? Because
polls are nothing more than beauty contests!

Season's not over. How many MWC teams finished ranked last year?! That
would be two. How many would be ranked this year if it wasn't for the
bias for the major leagues? You got SEC teams with 3 losses still ranked?!

THE TOP MWC TEAMS WOULD BE WISE TO BOLT THE MWC AND REJOIN THE WAC.......LET THE
WAC GET RID OF THE BOTTOM HALF OF THE CONFERENCE.....IDAHO/NEW MEXICO STATE/LA
TECH/SAN JOSE STATE AND LET THEM JOIN THE MTW CONFERENCE......BYU/UTAH/AF/TCU
CAN REJOIN THE WAC......REASON......BECAUSE OF THE BOISE STATE BSC GAME VRS
OKLAHOMA AND NOW THIS YEAR THE LIKELYHOOD OF ANOTHER WAC TEAM EITHER HAWAII OR
BOISE STATE IN THE SUGAR BOWL.....THE WAC HAS A MUCH HIGHER PROFILE IN THE
NATION THAN THE MWC....NO ONE EVEN KNOWS THE MWC EXSISTS.

I know one of the president of one of the PAC 10 schools....according to him at
the last meeting where PAC 10 expansion was mentioned....ONLY Fresno State,
Hawaii and Boise State and Nevada were under serious consideration mainly
because of their media attention and large fan base. The only MWC team discussed
was BYU but the consenses was they are too far east and not of the same caliber
as the WAC teams under consideration.

I would agree because of the publicity the WAC will become one of the
"chosen" conferences and added to the automatic BSC Bowl over the MWC
which no one know exsists.

I'd have to say the only way the western non-BCS schools can gain national
prominence from year to year is a rejoining of each conference's elites:
Utah, BYU, TCU, Wyoming from the MWC
Fresno, Hawaii, Boise (Nevada?) from the WAC
Houston (Tulsa?) from C-USA
Air Force should seek independence like the other service academies
That should be a BCS "expansion conference" if I've ever seen one. It is unfair that in a season like this (the powerful teams all with at least one loss) the best a BYU or Boise can hope for is some minor Toilet bowl game.
I'm sick of the traditionalists who think a national title should go to Michigan, ND, USC, LSU, Texas, OSU, or Miami every year. As we now see, parity is the way of college sports.

I would agree.....get rid of the bottom half of both the WAC and the MWC but I
think Houston & Tulsa are too far away. perhaps add 1 lower half team from
each WAC & MWC conference (New Mexico State because of their Basketball
program and UNLV also because of the basketball program)and keep the WAC name
since after this years BCS Bowl it will be considered a much higher profile
conference.

Totally agree with you Etah. Let the top tier of the MWC rejoin the top tier of
the WAC and let the bottom half of the WAC join the MWC. This would create a
conference worthy of an automatic berth in the added BCS Bowl. This conference
would have teams that will have played three times in a row in one of the major
BCS Bowls..Utah/Boise State/and Hawaii

I have a feeling that I am going to be 99 years old on my death bed and hear on
the tube that the BCS is no more...and then I will give up the ghost. I really
hope that will not be the case, so somebody please give me some comfort!

One way to get the MWC worthy of an automatic BCS bid would be to get 12 teams
split into a North and South conference. Here is how I would break it down.
