Students being trained how to avoid identity theft

I just tried to check my child's credit and it wouldn't let me because my child isn't 18 yet; it said that they don't actually have a credit report until they are 18. How can I check their credit and make sure that nothing like this happens to them or catch problems if they have already happened? Does anyone know?
