Illegal aliens who have entered the country illegally are being sent away because they have broken laws to enter the United States. If an immigrant enters legally, they will not be sent away. I belong to a religion which teaches me to repect laws and to be honest. It is wrong for an individual to illegally enter the United States. How can you argue that if you are a faithful member of the Church?

I like this a lot. Millions of Americans are financially benefitted every day because of the labors of millions of Latinos who do things well at a lower price than others would choose to receive.

Has a white person picked veggies or fruit all day long lately?

Or a black or Asian?

I am very grateful for this service and good food, every day. Affordable.

We are blessed and live in the promised land.

The issue is LEGAL. A country cannot sustain itself on an illigal population. We MAY be enjoying the cheap fruits and vegtables but you tax dollars are paying for free health care, schooling of all the illigals that are here. You don't win in the end.

The bigger issue is moral | 5:34 p.m. Oct. 14, 2007
If the "Church" Jennifer W belongs to is a Christian church, she also should consider that although Jesus did render unto Caesar what was Caesar's, the core of his message was love to the poor. The woman at the well was a Palestinian, despised by the Jews. Perhaps if Jesus were walking through Utah today, he would have stopped at a water faucet of a Mexican mother who was here illegally, was working hard to keep her children in school, was dressing them up each week and taking them to church, and was paying her taxes and raising a good family.

Illegal? Yes. Immoral? No. Harmful? Not if our lawmakers would craft a system that opened up a big enough door to let sufficient, carefully screened immigrants legally in to perform the work we all rely on.

This subject, as the comments suggest, evokes strong emotions, which have tended to run far afield of your intended point. Your focus on the human side of a culture which we need to better understand is much needed here. Having moved to Salt Lake after 50 years in San Diego, I was surprised and disappointed at the prevailing negative attitudes towards Hispanics in this state.

Theirs is a rich culture which should be embraced an appreciated.

13 million people cannot be made to disappear. Let's deal with our political mistakes of the past, make the most of it, and move on.

Thank you for your article. Finally, a true disciple of Jesus Christ speaks. Unfortunately, the word "illegal" in this respect is often used as a cowardly cover for racist attitudes. I for one am grateful for the richness and beauty which many cultures have added to my life as well as my community and nation. In this case, the word illegal is missapplied. A higher law should welcome those who would not only peacefully exist, but enhance the beauty of a diverse nation.

Illegals, just like everybody else, have taxes and SSA withheld from their paychecks. So why would we say they get things for free? I'm sure, if given the chance, they would work even harder, to make this country greater. Doesn't Jesus Christ give us chances? Who are we to judge?
