What a stud! I'm glad he's going to BYU
Duluth, GA | 4:50 a.m. Sept. 12, 2007
Amazing kid. I have three kicking sons. The oldest kicks for Memphis, the other two for the Varsity and Freshman teams. How much time does he spend in the weight room? Can't wait to see him as a Cougar.
Duluth, GA | 4:53 a.m. Sept. 12, 2007
The Duluth High record is a 67 yarder off of a free kick after signaling for a fair catch just before the end of the first half. Something for Peck to try sometime.

Congrats on the field goal Sorensen. Any way you can pad up for the Tulsa game?

Can this guy punt?
Texas Football | 7:03 a.m. Sept. 12, 2007
I got to watch the Skyline/Bingham game while I was in town in August. Though the game was pretty rough for me (I'm a Skyline alum), the bright spot was watching Sorensen kick. I've seen power kickers before, but I've never seen a someone kick the ball so accurately and so consistently far in my life (including college and pro kickers). I'm excited to see him play at BYU (I'm also a BYU alum), and I'm glad to hear what a great kid he is. Thanks for a great article, Robinson.

PS- Maybe coach Peck should allow his team to earn a celebration penalty after every touchdown, just to give Sorensen some extra practice on kick-offs.
Baffled | 7:29 a.m. Sept. 12, 2007
After reading this can someone tell me why Coach Peck went for two-point conversions on 3 separate occassions during the Jordan game? They ended up losing by one.

I just read this article to my 5th grade son who loves to play football. I've been telling him since 3rd Grade, "Be a kicker!" I think this might have been the deal maker! Thanks Doug for a great write up and especially thanks Justin for inspiring my young future Cougar to KICK!
Rose Bowl | 8:36 a.m. Sept. 12, 2007
I saw Justin at the BYU/UCLA game. The guy has some legs! He said he was excited to go out there and kick for BYU next season. I wish he could have helped out at the UCLA game.
Gunner | 8:37 a.m. Sept. 12, 2007
Baffled, The team was down by 5 after scoring a TD the first time. That is why he chose to go for 2. I should say the first two 2 pt tries were wide open passes that were dropped by the receivers in the endzone. The last one to go for the win was because it was a pre season game and he already had enough guys injured. Peck figured he'd try to get the game over with and get out of there without any further injuries in a game that didn't really matter.
Friday night lights fan | 9:20 a.m. Sept. 12, 2007
Baffled and Gunner,
Also, Peck said Jordan was on fire and moving the ball at will and he didnt want to go to over time with them.
Dwain | 9:21 a.m. Sept. 12, 2007
Hey lets not forget Mat Wheatley If you matched him up with sorensen he would make twice as many and twice as far wheatley is the best kicker in the entire state

Seriously, can this guy learn to punt? It sounds like he has the tools, and enjoys a challenge.

Mat Wheatley? who the devil is that!
rj | 10:45 a.m. Sept. 12, 2007
This is why BYU will contend for a BCS bowl next year, not this year. the kicking game is too critical to the game, and BYU can't contend with the mediocre kickers they have right now. He sounds like at Mitch Payne on steroids.
Gunner | 11:04 a.m. Sept. 12, 2007
Friday nigh lights fan. I agree. I was at the game and when the call was made I made that exact comment. We couldn't stop them, so don't try doing it from the 10 yard line in overtime. Go for the win.
Can't Wait | 11:43 a.m. Sept. 12, 2007
Can he come in and kick now? BYU's kickers are terrible. So sad that Mr. Mitch Payne's big brother is not there to help him keep his job. He got you in the school and now this kid with much better talent is about to put you out of a job.
T-Rex | 11:49 a.m. Sept. 12, 2007
TMQ immutable laws, kick early, go for it late; don't go for two unless it puts you ahead now. Bet they wish the had had those two points at the end.

Is there any way we can get Sorensen on our team this week? Doesn't he have enough credits to graduate early from H.S? Somebody get LaVelle on the phone with the governor to see if he can pull some strings for us.

Dwain how can Wheatley be the best kicker in the entire state when Sorenson is probably the best kicker in the nation?

Dwain,
Has Wheatley kicked 3 50+ yard field goals including a state record 62 Yard field goal? Until he does Sorenson is the best kicker to ever come out of the state of Utah or even the entire Western region.

Gunner: your double talk is hilarious! In some of your comments in other articles you seem to act as Peck's very own spokesperson? How the heck do you know what Peck is thinking? You've talked in past articles about Alta's bad coaching decisions, but are quick to defend Bingham's bad coaching decisions? If Bingham had just stuck with getting extra points period, they wouldn't even had needed the last extra point...they would've been up by one!
You say that pre-season didn't matter to Peck? I call B.S. Against Kahuku, he left his first team in the whole game, while Kahuku made many substitutions along the way. You make statements like you are actually standing on Bingham's Sideline when they play. Just as a general reader of these blogs, you are by far the most hypocritical reader/commenter I've ever seen. Unless you actaully have a say in High School football, may I suggest you keep your unprofessional and nonexpert comments to yourself!!!!

Blue | 3:32 p.m. Sept. 12, 2007
What?,

If you read enough, you'll find that Gunner was coached by Peck and anyone who has played for Peck knows what kind of guy he is and how he thinks. If you read Gunners comment carefully, you'll find that injuries played a part in the decision to go for two and end the game. Maybe he did talk to Coach Peck, a lot of his former players go down and talk to him before and after the game. Some do actually stand on the field during the game.

Plus, we're talking about going into overtime, not a game that was won in regulation and didn't have a chance of going into overtime. I don't think it's hypocritical at all when you really think about it...
Gunner | 4:34 p.m. Sept. 12, 2007
What? I posted on earlier but it wasn't put on here. In short I stated: 1. In an article after the loss Peck himself made the statement of why he chose to go for 2. So all you have to do is read to know this. 2. He didn't leave the first team in the entire game against Kahuku. The 2nd string actually scored the last touchdown. 3. If the kids would have caught the wide open passes when down by 5, the two pt conversions would have made all the difference in the game. 4 I know many coaches on the staff so I do know some of the reasons he does thing. As Blue also stated, I played for Dave so I know what he's like. Anytime you feel like getting any more of our non points shot down feel free to ask.
football junky | 5:37 p.m. Sept. 12, 2007
this kid is amazing! you will soon see him playing on sundays. Hard to find really good kickers let alone decent. Good Luck.
BT | 5:50 p.m. Sept. 12, 2007
Gunner knows what he's talking about. As Blue said, many of our former players are on the sideline during games. They want to be there because of the respect they have for the coaches and how they feel about the program. I've helped out a little here and there for 20 years so I know a little about the team. I can only hope that I've helped a little to contribute to their good experience with Bingham football. I wasn't on the sieline for the Jordan game but only because I was needed to run the scoreboard. I wanted to be on the sideline, but had to fill in for the AWOL Jordan crew. (BTW, thanks for NOT providing a scorekeeper when you DEMANDED to be allowed to have one of your people do it, Jordan. If your team was as organized as your support staff they wouldn't have found the field much less the end zone!)
I've known Dave Peck since he was an assistant under Son Sudbury. I can tell you that he and his coaching staff have the team's best interests in mind at all times.

if he can be consistent and kick when the game is on the line like jason elam, then sorenson will be in good company. in high school he's there. let's see if the next two levels he can continue to step up.

Anyone want to post those videos of his kicks (including the wind aided 75 yarder) on youtube?
Gunner | 8:26 p.m. Sept. 12, 2007
BT, I played under Sonny when Dave was an assistant. Graduated in 89. We didn't have a great team, but still knew the type of guy Dave was and loved his intensity. I coach in the little league program now for Bingham. Have for 11 years now. So like you, it's good to feel like you've given something back to the program and school that meant so much to me when I grew up in the little league and high school program.
Todd | 9:32 p.m. Sept. 12, 2007
Its insane to think this kid can bench 330. I don't think anyone on my schools team can bench that, and this KICKER is doing it? What a stud, I hope this kid goes places. The only thing I don't understand is why he doesn't go play for a bigger school, if he's the best in the nation then he could obviously go to any school. Go to a big school, but I hope you do good at BYU.

Former Bingham kicker | 8:22 a.m. Sept. 13, 2007
When I was a senior justin was a freshman and I new it than that he was gonna do some damage. He should have started varsity his sophmore yr. Like him i was also chasing the record but I didnt get it so i hope he does. Im glad that now things have changed at bingham to where they will allow the kickers to kick from 60yrds. I remember we lost some games cause coaches didnt think they had the kicker to do so but in the las 4yrs Bingham has turned into a dynasty of amazing kickers so it will be no surprise for a kicker from Bingham to be named player of the month sometime in the future. Best of wishes to Justin (please keep talkin to pac 10 bud) and I will see Bingham at there next home game
joe | 8:25 a.m. Sept. 13, 2007
Too bad he's going to ruin his career by going to BYU.
