Isn't the answer pretty obvious in terms of what needs to be done? Let's see, people are stealing our children's identities and possibly ruining their credit files before they even have a chance to work. Hmmm, seems like a no brainer to me: STOP IT!
How? Enforce current laws, one state at a time.

Identifying identity theives is a no brainer. I see employers hiring illegals on a daily basis which is something my company has refused to do for over 17 years.
The Social Security Administration publishes a booklet that explains how to detect phony documents normally used in job placement.
My company is the larges employer in So. Utah with over 2000 employees. We have NO illegal employees and normally reject 1 or 2 illegal job applicants on a daily basis.
Get real people....quit hiring illegals.

The statement " it is a federal issue" shows a sanctuary state attitude. Up holding the law take all people. If it is illegal than you need to assist or participate in enforcemet. Turning a blind eye to ILLEGALS is so common. Here it is common for one church to have 50% of its group ILLEGAL and do nothing, evenif they profess to obey the law of the land. Sad state. The law is the law. Theoir are statutes for criminal conspiracy that need to be used.

It is stunning to me to think that President Bush and a large minority of legislators nearly passed an immigration "reform" bill that would have done almost nothing, effectively speaking, to reduce or eliminate this problem. Especially when a completely effective solution exists.

The solution to this problem is a national citizen identity card that is tied to the actual person it is meant to identify. That is, using biometrics, the possibility of having one's identity stolen is reduced to zero. There are several iron-clad methods to acheive this.

Having a truly effective means of verifying the identity, and, more to the point of this article, the citizenship status of everyone in the country, would be a solution to many very serious problems facing our nation right now. The sooner the better.

Pretty ironic that this is the same state legislature that gives illegals drivers licenses and has an Attorney General (shameless Shurtleff) who stood in front of illegals and told them that he will NEVER prosecute them.
Shurtleff went on to get the Order of the Aztec Eagle from Vecente Fox for that one. As long as Shurtleff is attorney general we will continue to have the laws ignored and our identities stolen!

Any lawyers out there? Isn't this a violation of the equal protection clause in the constitution? Illegals can drive without a license, drive without car insurance, and now steal another's identy and suffer no real penalties. What do you think would happen to U.S. citizens who violated these laws? Someone needs to sue the state and federal governments.

Deborah, you are usually pretty good on this issue, but you are already several weeks out of date. "After that meeting, the Bush administration announced a new policy, which takes effect this month and gives employers a specific time line to clear up mismatches between names and Social Security numbers or else fire employees." This policy has been conveniently been put on indefinite hold by the Ninth Circuit Court. The cheap labor and ethnocentric groups working together have pretty good control of this issue.

I say any income (tax) that goes into someone's SSA records by an invader should be allowed to be kept by the legitimate SS-Card holder. IOW, say an invader (& it's determined THAT THAT is how the $ got there as opposed to just being a clerical error on an employer's/govt's part) steals my SSA#--adds that to the total I paid into it---& ends up giving me higher retirement benefits then SO BE IT. But OH-NO the feds keep it the "suspense file", IOW, the govt benefits from invaders while citizens are screwed. And I think that's bull. However, I also think that if an invader ruins the credit of someone...now THAT ought to be corrected.

BTW, IMHO, once it's found out that an invader had put $ into a legit person's acct that invader should be tracked down by the govt & booted out of the USA FOREVER & EVER!!!(see below) IOW, no 10 yr ban but a LIFETIME ban of being allowed to re-enter the USA for ANY REASON WHATSOEVER!!!

Mike Haynes, Does your employer report fraud attempt(s) to ICE? If not--WHY NOT? Even if ICE doesn't do anything about it AT LEAST you would've tried!

Sam Hill, Neither God, my parents or the Constitution decided I needed a Big Brother & I DON'T WANT ONE NOW via Natl ID card. If we give border guards standing orders to SHOOT DEAD any adult they see crossing either No./So. border @ unapproved locations that would cut-down on the # of invaders & tell those that we catch in the interior that out they go once w/ DNA & fingerprints taken & if they are ever caught inside the USA EVER AGAIN FOR ANY REASON they will be summarily EXECUTED upon verification via DNA & fingerprints of previous-expulsion & previous-warning.

The legislation requiring the firing of those that gave employers fake #'s should have instead said that the requirement be that upon the employer verifying that they had not made a clerical error in their submission to the govt that the employer report the person to ICE. Or at the very least report back to SSA that they (the employer) had not made a clerical error that the SSA then report such persons & their addresses to ICE.

Where is the General Attorney in this? Too busy chasing Warren Jeffs while allowing illegals to thrive at the expense of legal citizens. Just see how many work up at the Capitol, in custodial and on the construction crews, right under his NOSE

Mark Shurtleff needs to get his priorities straight. Start prosecuting illegal immigrants and all the associated crimes with illegal immigration. I am tired of hearing law enforcement making excuses for why they don't prosecute these crimes. There should not be a double standard for illegal immigrants. Start prosecuting them!

identity theft victim | 7:48 p.m. Sept. 16, 2007
I think Anonymous has a point- I think that those of us who are victims of identity theft ought to have a right to the SSA earnings that were earned by those criminals who stole our identities from us and have it called a restitution measure. Heaven knows that we will never see anything otherwise. This is a nightmare, even when your identity is stolen from a US citizen. It is much worse, I imagine, when someone undocumented and virtually untraceable is out there ruining your credit and life. I am still traumatized by my experience and I was only dinged by one instance totalling $5000 from someone I knew. I consider myself lucky as I do know of people who were robbed by people they didn't know for thousands and thousands of dollars and didn't find out until it was almost too late.

At any rate, once an identity thief has performed their hit and run, or financial rape, they should be held to the highest possible consequence that the law should allow. And as an illegal who does this? There is no easy answer. From a financial standpoint, it is better to send them home so the taxpayers are not supporting them in our penal facilities. But that only grants them their freedom to live in their own countries and come back and stab us again, illegally. And I agree, if someone is deported, there should be no 10 year waiting period to return legally. If you broke the law coming here in the first place, there should be no second chances, ESPECIALLY if you broke other laws your first time round. If they broke the law the first time, what makes you think they'll be an upstanding citizen if they are allowed back?

"It's a federal issue"

Isn't it fascinating? When people suggest that Utah deny drover's licenses or state benefits or help the Feds enforce the law, the Open Borders freaks claim "it's a federal issue."

But when the Feds do try to ban state's from giving driver's licenses or in-state tuition or anything else in order to enforce the immigration laws, they say "The Feds can't get involved - those are state issues!"

These neofeudalists will use any lame, dishonest argument to continue the flow of cheap labor. That includes the News editorial board.

No. Utah sees a major earthquake every 350 years. Last one? 350 years ago.
