From reading Lee Benson's article, I get the impression that the Massacre appearantly never happened.

Some of you have stated that Brigham was very sorry that the massacre had ever happened. History does not support this.

According to Mormon Apostle Wilford Woodruff 's diary, Mormon President Brigham Young visited the site of the Mountain Massacre: "May 25 (1861)... The pile of stone was about twelve feet high but beginning to tumble down. A wooden cross is placed on top with the following words, Vengeance is mine and I will repay saith the Lord...

Pres. Young said it should be Vengeance is mine and I have taken a little."

The men with Brigham then destroyed the cross and the words "Vengeance is mine and I will repay saith the Lord..."

Blain...if the descendants of the Fancher Train should sue the LDS Church for everything it has...who then...should the descendants of the murdered Mormons at Haun's Mill, and all those who died on the trek west in the dead of winter, turn around and sue?

The Protestant Church...perhaps? The Baptists? Who?

Morgan...the Fancher train only stopped in the vicinity of Cedar City in order to try to buy or trade for needed supplies in order to continue their journey.

The Fancher train had camped outside of Salt Lake City for a little over a week while waiting for stragglers...with no incidents or altercations with the Mormons whatsoever.

HAD the Mormons in Cedar City followed the admonitions of Christ and supplied the physical needs of their brothers and sisters...the train would have moved along without incident, and the Mormons would not have this ugly incident sullying their history.

But they chose to listen to the admonition of Brigham Young NOT to buy, sell or trade with gentiles.

'Perfection'...what an arrogant comment. What an arrogant moniker. And what an arrogant misconception regarding the Christian status of the LDS faith.

Lets just go with your comment and take it one step further.

'Mormons murdered women and children'.

How many women and children were murdered by the Catholic faith during the Inquisitions? Or by the Protestant faith during the witch hunts? How many Catholic and Protestants have murdered one another...and all in the name of the same Christ?

Does this mean that Catholics and Protestants of today are not Christians because of what their ancestors might have done?

to M. in Utah

It doesn't matter whether you're a member or non-member - Utahn's don't always welcome outsiders. My friend (who is a member) moved over a year ago into a small community and to this day isn't 'welcomed' ... although she is a lovely giving and warm individual and her family is the same.

There are also 'mean' people in EVERY religion, not just 'mormons' ... we're not perfect, just trying to be.

I live in So. Cal., where the Mexican gangs are plentiful and hurtful, but I don't blame ALL MEXICANS because it's just the few that run rampant giving themselves a bad name.

People aren't perfect and the church is run by people who are TRYING to make a difference.

MMM - it's history - not one that we are proud of but the church IS trying to take care of the area, not trying to hide it. Let's learn from the atrocity, forgive and move on, while honoring those innocent victims. Perhaps the grief of losing someone twisted the minds of those that committed the atrocities. It doesn't make it right, it never will, but we don't know the mind set or emotional set of those that committed this crime. Let go, let God.

Halwrite, thank you. That is huge coming from you. Ah, Morning Glory...really? When I was led here to read a business partner's response to an article about MMM, I was both surprised to find your comment here and then its contents.

The author of the article was called an "idiot" by you. I couldn't publically call you or anyone that for taking a polar position from my own. It's just not the kind of behavior we all signed up for as a followers of Christ. Having said that, I often err, myself, in my actions and I'm not harboring any ill will or judgement, just surprise. If you are my friend, as truly I have always believed, understand my disappointment. Lee Bensen has spent a good deal of time checking facts and then presenting his opinion. I just don't understand why there wouldn't be a consideration by you that, in fact, the makers of "September Dawn" got it wrong. I don't think only "idots" make that assertion. Good people, who've done their homework, and who feel that the "blame game" has wrongly targeted Brigham Young have as much right as you do to comment without anyone calling anyone else, "idiot."
