How can Casey Fitts say the city's offer to purchase Granite High was a surprise when it was the city council that first made the suggestion to Granite District??

The other paradox is his comment that the school district "failed to make (Granite) a viable high school..." That's an interesting comment from a city which emphasizes industrial growth to the point where families are leaving the city.

How can you make a viable high school in a city that has just over 300 high school age students??

South Salt Lake was its own worst enemy by failing to build a stable residential community. Many years ago the city fathers said they were going to focus on becoming the industrial hub of the Salt Lake Valley. So where is the money that plan should have generated and where are the people who would populate a high school? Living in Weswt Valley City and elsewhere.

Well if they FORCE kids to go to the school, maybe they can SAVE it. The East side schools really have quite a bit of population problems when it comes to keeping schools open. Simply put, they grew up.

Is splitting really going to help keep schools open? No. Granite should be closed as it is no longer needed.

The South Salt Lake City Council needs to realize that Granite High will never again function as a high school; the building falls short of current seismic codes and architects estimate that it would take three times the cost to retrofit the building than to demolish it and rebuild. The building, although rich in history, is a money pit.

If the city did buy Granite High, it would quickly fall into further disrepair, because the city has siphoned funds away from the Parks and Rec department and cannot even keep the weeds and the crumbling cement under control at the Columbus Center. The cost to maintain a property like Granite High would only further increase the citizen's tax burden after last year's 133% property tax increase.

South Salt Lake needs to demonstrate some level of fiscal responsibility before it runs off to make a sentimental purchase of this size.
Granite is Dunzo | 3:26 p.m. Sept. 3, 2007
People just need to get over the fact that Granite High needs to be closed. It's run it's course. 100 years. All buildings need to be torn down, because they are so old. If there's an earthquake, anyone inside WILL die, and the buidings will crumble down. There are HUGE cracks all over the inside of the main building and the A building. You can see them while walking outside a long the bilding.
I was at Granite when they decided to make the changes, but then I just transferred schools and I am SO happy I did. Cottonwood is a great school, and no one should complain about going there.

Granite District made these changes to save money, but I don't see how it's saving money when there are only 2 or 3 kids in each class. Send them to their home schools! With so few kids, it wouldn't be hard to make rooms and bigger schools in the district.

It would be POINTLESS for South Salt Lake to buy Granite to use for their city hall. Wouldn't it be more worth while to get a nicer building with no mold or cracks in the foundation?

And kids can seriously just go to Cottonwood. It isn't that far. And it's a great school. I love it. It is better than Granite in many ways. Unlike Granite, Cottonwood kids don't feel the need to constantly brag about being clique-less, and that everyone is friends. WE HAVE SPORTS!!!! Kids are so nice here. The campus is a lot nicer too. And there are more elective class opportunities at Cottonwood.

Granite is DUNZO and there is NOTHING you can do about it. Next earthquake in the Salt Lake valley, that place is GONE forever!
