Rocky, Salt Lake City Council to square off on Leonardo museum

The downtown library is one of the only, really nice, modern buildings we have in SLC. I would love to see an improvement to the Leonardo. We need to continue supporting movements to help finish this project. I'm not wild about paying any more for it, so I'd be interested to hear Mayor Anderson's proposal in how to pay for it.

Arts and science sounds great, but I already voted on this (and raised my own taxes in a show of support). Just because the city doesn't know how to make a budget, doesn't mean I should have my taxes increased. Don't we have bigger priorities, like a new police station? I say tell Leonardo to go raise the money they need, like they told us they would. I'm tired of the "inflation" argument. As if inflation just started after we voted on the bond back in 03.

Is the Leonardo supposed to display only the "arts and sciences" that have been created within the boundaries of Salt Lake City? That would be silly, just as the new City library is not limited to books written by Salt Lake City residents. My guess is that Mayor Anderson does not want to relinquish exclusive control in return for funds from the County and State. When there are a million people within the service area of the museum, why shouldn't they be part of funding and running it?

With respect to the City's requirement that the renovated facility meet ideal environmental goals: That may be unrealistic since it is an existing structure. A little flexibility on those requirements could probably reduce the costs, even if Mayor Anderson can't brag about how he has waved his magic environmental wand over the building. Maybe they could even finance some of the cost by selling bottled water to the public.

I hope they ditch this plan. It would be less expensive if they demolish the building and begin a new. I would rather see housing there. This is a lost cause.

Ron---just curious, what mess? I moved to SLC from Holladay 2 years ago, and my neighborhood in the city is much cleaner, quieter, and friendlier than in the county. Truth is, SLC is one of the country's most beautiful and well-run cities. That's a fact. I actually live here-- do YOU?

I think a public safety building is much larger priority than asking for more money for The Leonardo.
