There woul dbe a ruduced need for coal if we could develope ALL of our Oil and natural gas resources, plus build new refineries. The groupd that yell loudest about not doing this have no actual workable plan to produce more energy except catch phrase sources. Wind power? ask Kekkkedy about wghy he thinks it is so great but not off his high buck estate;. Hydrogen power? how much energy does it take to produce it? Ethanol fuel? it takes more energy to produce it than you get and is starting to effect food prices. The good point is the rich farmer gets richer.

Coal mining is hazardous and is regulated.

Renewable power sources with the exception of hydro and geothermal need to be backed up 100% by a fossil fuel source. Often the sun doesn't shine and the wind doesn't blow. The only reliable source is "N" power.(I have to use "N" because many suffer from "N" phobia (phobia=irrational fear) The death rate from coal mining in the U.S. is 49:100,000 while the "N" power rate is zero. In fact it has been zero in the U.S.A for the past 50 years. This is not to say that wind and solar shouldn't be put to the best possible use. There are no global warming gases released from "N" plants.

The modern coal miner is one of the most unappreciated-- yet important-- persons in America. Our modern society runs on plentiful, affordable electricty, most of which is produced from coal. 100% of our gasoline and diesel demand could be economically produced from coal today. The U.S.is to coal as Opech is to oil-- with more of it left to mine here than any other country on earth. It is our ace in the hole-- our bridge to our enery future-- fusion. Our technological prowess demands plentiful electicity. However, it is the mission of those who hate America, not to let that happen. And I don't mean the Islamic extremists.
