I just had my taxes done today and talked to my accountant about the flat tax proposal. As far as he and I could determine, the flat tax would mean an increase in taxes for most people in the population earning around $50,000 a year. This seems to me to be a tax hike hiding behind promises of lower rates and vague promises. One of the basic tenets of the Republican party is that we should not raise taxes. Are our Republican representatives turning tail on their own basic principles?

No. Utah sees a major earthquake every 350 years. Last one? 350 years ago.
