According to his biography, Inouye served in World War II as a member of the Japanese American 442nd Regimental Combat Team. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2000. Inouye earned a J.D. degree at George Washington Law School and was elected to the Senate in 1962. He is the first Japanese American to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and later the first in the Senate.
