According to his biography, Lautenberg's parents were Polish and Russian immigrants who came to the United States through Ellis Island. Lautenberg served in the Army Signal Corps in Europe, attended Columbia University on the G.I. Bill, and graduated with a degree in economics. He was first elected to the Senate in 1982. He briefly retired after his third term and returned to the Senate in 2002.
