In college football, winning isn't the only factor. Who you beat, and how, is a vital part of moving up the rankings and getting into a good bowl game. So each week during the 2012 season, we'll take a look at how BYU's past and future opponents performed.

Oct. 20: at Notre Dame, 1:30 p.m. (NBC)
Oct. 27: at Georgia Tech, TBA
Nov. 10: Idaho, TBA
Nov. 17: at San Jose State, 2 p.m.
Nov. 24: at New Mexico St., 1:30 p.m.
Last week: Won at UNLV, 35-27.
The Cougars squeaked out a win in Vegas against the hapless Rebels, as backup quarterback Connor Halliday threw for 378 yards and 4 touchdowns. Fortunately for Wazzu, their next opponent is even worse.
Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 vs. Colorado
Last week: Lost to McNeese State, 35-21
The Wildcats still can't get off the schneid, but at least all three of their losses have been non-conference games. There's still hope as they start Big Sky play.
Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 vs. Eastern Washington
Last week: Won vs. BYU, 24-21
Wacky ending notwithstanding, the Utes can be proud of a gutty, mentally tough performance against their archrivals. They deserved the win, even missing several key players. Their Pac-12 schedule won't be kind, though.
Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 at Arizona State
Last week: Won vs. Miami (OH), 39-12
Their opening loss to Michigan State was tough to swallow, but the Broncos bounced back by beating up on the RedHawks. Next up: a Thursday date with BYU on the Smurf Turf.
Next up: Thursday, Sept. 20 vs. BYU
Last week: Won vs. Lamar, 54-2
The Warriors got thumped by USC to start the season, but they took out any frustrations on Lamar last weekend. (At least Lamar got a safety!) Hawaii hosts Nevada in the islands before flying to BYU the following week.
Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 vs. Nevada
Last week: Lost at Wisconsin, 16-14
Oh so close. Utah State was a field goal away from beating the Big Ten's Badgers in Madison, but kicker Josh Thompson sent the kick wide. Take nothing away from these Aggies, though -- they may be the best team in the state.
Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 at Colorado State
Last week: No game
The Beavers have only played one game so far, but it was a big one: an upset of Wisconsin. After a bye week, they face another big challenge in Los Angeles against undefeated UCLA.
Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 at UCLA
Last week: Won at Michigan State, 20-3
Quarterback Everett Golson had another tough day, completing only 14 of 32 passes for 178 yards and one touchdown, but it was enough as the Irish shut down the Spartans in East Lansing. Linebacker Manti Te'o is a monster on defense.
Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 vs. #18 Michigan
Last week: Won vs. Virginia, 56-20
Anyone who thinks running the football is boring hasn't watched Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets' option attack piled up 461 yards on the ground against Virginia, with four different players scoring touchdowns.
Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 vs. Miami
Last week: Lost at LSU, 63-14
Ouch. The Vandals got torn to shreds by the Tigers in Baton Rouge. But things are looking up -- this week Idaho faces a team they might actually beat. (Possibly. Maybe.)
Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 vs. Wyoming
Last week: Won vs. Colorado State, 40-20
After falling just short at Stanford to start the season, the Spartans have been racking up points and passing yards. Quarterback David Fales threw for 370 of them last week, along with three touchdowns.
Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 at San Diego State
Last week: Lost at UTEP, 41-28
The Aggies' receivers look good, as Kemonte Bateman and Austin Franklin each tallied seven catches and over 100 yards. But that's mostly because NMSU had to throw a lot after the defense gave up 27 straight points to start the game.
Next up: Saturday, Sept. 22 vs. New Mexico
