After the Olympics, Detweiler graduated from the Naval Academy and became a Naval officer.

Later he worked as a director of research for energy and communications at Eyring Research Institute in Provo.

Detweiler taught math, history and English at Alpine Life in Orem .

He also had a love for the arts and performing. He was the Chairman of the Utah County Arts Council, and founding member of Utah Piano Quartet. He also performed in plays and musicals and sang with Salt Lake Opera Company.

Detweiler passed away December 8, 2003.
