Adults per ton: 13.6

A key determinant of the body mass index is motor vehicle gas consumption per capita. That's why so many middle eastern countries made the list.

I knew the U.S. would be number one.

No surprise. When I was young we walked everywhere and lots of 2 and 3 story buildings had no elevators or escalators. Now we see lots of fat kids. We teased fat kids when I was growing up.

The article says, "Continental North America had just 6 percent of the world's population, yet it had 34 percent of the world's human biomass due to obesity."

It would be well to mention that "biomass due to obesity" means biomass beyond a BMI of 30. It does not mean that, because of obesity, North America has 34 percent of the world's human biomass.

It would also be well to mention that the report cited gives data in "tonnes", not "tons". One tonne is equal to 1000 kg, not 2000 pounds. The report says the average adult body mass in North America is 80.7 kg or 178 pounds, which is 12.4 per tonne and 11.2 per ton.

This doesn't make sense. This island nations like Tonga and Samoa are fatter than the US. Were they just not included in the study?

Great article and also a sad commentary on the poor eating habits of the United States.
