Summer is almost here and that means families are gearing up to go on vacation. That usually involves a hotel. But not all hotels are created equal. Here's a list of the best and worst hotels, according to Consumer Reports. The hotel ratings are based on the experiences of 22,481 readers during 34,352 hotel stays at 44 U.S. chains from January 2010 to June 2011 and are ranked based on value, upkeep, comfort, check-in and service.

This is really quite a useless list. I have stayed in many of these hotels and for every brand there are some that are wonderful and some that are not. Every single hotel brand has properties that are great places to stay and those that are not so great. It depends on the particular location and not the name of the chain.

I must agree with "reader" I have been in many of these chains over the years and quality ran the scale. I have been in excellent Days Inns and miserable ones, same with Best Western and Comfort Inn. The only thing that was constant was that the upscale hotels were usually fairly consistent.

I'm in shock Crowne Plaza rates so low considering it's one of the "crown jewels" in the IHG brands. All in all it's useless as reader pointed out.

Great article. Very informative and based upon rankings by thousands of individuals who had thousands of visits to the various hotels. I especially appreciated the cost estimates for each hotel. I personally enjoyed this article and found it helpful in determining which hotels would fit my budget. I also thought it was amusing and fun to compare the differences in the best to the worst. Thank you for a superb article that was well written, to the point, and shared valuable information to those who appreciate the time involved in putting such an article together.

I realize that the quality of every chain can vary some, but I still feel this is a very helpful list and if I were planning a vacation, I would read it over a few times. I think this article is great!
