Deseret News' high school football MVPs of the past.
Ravell Call, Deseret News
The votes are in, and the MVPs have been selected for the Utah 2012 high school football season. This year's divisional MVP winners and Mr. Football are the latest in a long line of oustanding Utah high school athletes.
These are the last fifteen Mr. Football award winners and the divisional MVPs in the state of Utah.

Congrats to these young men. Maybe it's just me but I thought I would hear more of these men from prior years at the college level by now. I only recognize a few of the names.
Is Mr. Football and the Divisional MVP's picked from the state championship teams or is that just a coincidence?
The reason I ask is that as I look at this years and past years selections...it looks like the MVPs and Mr. Football are the best player from the state championship team and not necessarily the best player in the state at that division.
A case in point would be the 2005 selection. Stanley Havili was the best running back, best player and most sought after athlete that year. He went on to be a 4 year letterwinner and star at USC and then drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles. Riley Nelson had an astronomical season that year so I understand the Mr. Football selection. However, Brady Wootton getting the 4A MVP over Havili must be due to Mountain Crest winning the championship that year because both Havili and Wootton had similiar rushing yards, Havili had a little more receiving yards but Havili had 5 or 6 more TDs on the season. Havili was also ranked nationally at the running back position.
So is it fair to say that the MVP and Mr. Football come from the state champion teams?

Most years the MVP and Mr. Football do come from the teams that make the Championship game. However in 2009 the Chynoweth kid from Park City won the 3-A MVP. Juan Diego and Hurricane played for the championship.
