Top-ranked American Fork heads into the playoffs on a 21-game winning streak as it established itself as the 5A playoffs front-runner. Plenty of tough opponents await, including Sky View from Region 1, Viewmont and West from Region 2 and Copper Hills and Bingham from Region 3. In alphabetical order, these are the 16 teams that have qualified for the 5A girls state basketball tournament. The Deseret News will be live streaming the entire tournament, starting with Monday's first-round games.

Scoring offense: 67.4 ppg (1st in 5A)

Scoring defense: 48.9 ppg (17th in 5A)

Last state championship: 2009

2015 postseason: Lost to Sky View in 5A quarterfinals, 63-55

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Win over Sky View in 5A championship

Edward’s evaluation: Since dropping its season-opener to Alta, the Cavemen have won 21 straight and there’s no reason that streak can’t reach 25 by the end of the 5A playoffs. American Fork ranks first in 5A in scoring at 67.4 ppg, many of those points coming in transition with a pressing defense that can give teams fits.

Bingham Miners (16-7)

Coach: Charron Mason (4th year)

How qualified: Tied for first in Region 3 with an 11-1 record

Playoff opener: vs. Roy/Northridge winner, Monday, 12:50 p.m. (SLCC)

2015 postseason: Lost to American Fork in 5A quarterfinals, 66-50

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Sky View in 5A semifinals

Edward’s evaluation: The Miners played a very difficult preseason schedule and were on the short end of numerous close games against some of the best teams in the state. In region play, Bingham only had a couple of close games, but in its two most recent ones it prevailed in wins over Taylorsville and Copper Hills. The Miners hope that experience pays off in what figures to be a very tight state tournament.

Brighton Bengals (6-14)

Coach: Jim Gresh (18th year)

How qualified: Fourth in Region 3 with a 6-6 record

Last state championship: 2015

2015 postseason: Lost to Sky View in 5A quarterfinals, 78-42

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Sky View in 5A first round

Edward’s evaluation: The fourth seed from Region 3 didn’t win a preseason game and didn’t beat any of the playoff teams ahead of it in the standings. Brighton faces a daunting task in the 5A first round against the same Sky View team that it lost to by 36 in the quarterfinals last year.

Clearfield Falcons (11-10)

Coach: Rebecca Parker (10th year)

How qualified: Third in Region 1 with a 6-6 record

2015 postseason: Lost to Riverton in 5A first round, 50-37

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Copper Hills in 5A first round

Edward’s evaluation: Back in mid-December, Clearfield hosted Copper Hills in an intriguing non-region game and was promptly crushed by the Grizzlies by 30 points. Two months later, Clearfield is anxious to find out if it's progressed enough to be competitive against one of the top teams in 5A. Recent region games suggest the Falcons have a chance, but they will need to shoot very well to have a chance.

Copper Hills Grizzlies (19-3)

Coach: Ben Morley (8th year)

How qualified: Tied for first in Region 3 with an 11-1 record

Playoff opener: vs. Clearfield, Monday, 9:10 p.m. (SLCC)

2015 postseason: Lost to Layton in 5A semifinals, 46-44

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to American Fork in 5A semifinals

Edward’s evaluation: With the top scoring defense in 5A, and the third-best scoring offense, Copper Hills is definitely one of the front-runners heading into the playoffs. Statistically speaking, Copper Hills benefitted from a very weak bottom half of Region 3, winning three games by 50-plus points. Without many competitive games, will it be sharp coming tourney time when most games will be four-quarter grinds?

Davis Darts (10-11)

Coach: Anne Jones (7th year)

How qualified: Fourth in Region 2 with a 7-5 record

Playoff opener: vs. American Fork, Monday, 5:50 p.m. (at SLCC)

2015 postseason: Loss to Copper Hills in 5A first round, 44-24

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to American Fork in 5A first round

Edward’s evaluation: Davis will be a massive underdog against 5A’s top-ranked team in the first round. But the Darts are riding a wave of confidence after winning four straight to end the season, including a 47-42 win over Layton on Feb. 10.

Fremont Silver Wolves (12-9)

Coach: Lisa Dalebout (14th year)

How qualified: Second in Region 1 with an 8-4 record

2015 postseason: Loss to Pleasant Grove in 5A first round, 70-66

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to American Fork in 5A quarterfinals

Edward’s evaluation: For a two-game stretch back in December, Fremont looked like it was emerging as a dangerous team in 5A with wins over Layton and Copper Hills. It hasn’t had a similar quality win since and heads into the playoffs as a bit of a wildcard. The potential is there for a great performance, but it could just as easily bow out opening day.

Layton Lancers (15-6)

Coach: Van Price (29th year)

How qualified: Third in Region 2 with a 9-3 record

2015 postseason: Win over Sky View in 5A championship, 73-65

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Pleasant Grove in 5A first round

Edward’s evaluation: Ended the season on a two-game skid with losses to Davis and West, and the Lancers are looking more and more like a one-and-done playoff team if they can’t get their offense back on track soon.

Lone Peak Knights (9-12)

Coach: Nancy Warner (4th year)

How qualified: Fourth in Region 4 with a 7-5 record

Playoff opener: vs. West, Monday, 7:30 p.m. (at SLCC)

2015 postseason: Loss to Sky View in 5A first round, 72-37

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to West in 5A first round

Edward’s evaluation: Beat Pleasant Grove 48-47 on the last day of the regular season, and even though it had no bearing on its playoff seeding, it’s the type of win that could springboard Lone Peak in the playoffs. It lost to Pleasant Grove by 16 points in the first meeting, but has shown signs of improvement throughout region play.

Northridge Knights (11-10)

Edward’s evaluation: Despite losing three of its last four games, Northridge can still qualify for the playoffs as the Region 1 No. 4 seed if it wins Saturday’s play-in game. If the Knights do prevail, it will be a quick exit from the playoffs with Bingham awaiting.

2015 postseason: Loss to Layton in 5A quarterfinals, 54-37

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Sky View in 5A quarterfinal

Edward’s evaluation: With its size, Pleasant Grove is a team that nobody wants to see in the playoffs. A year ago the Vikings pulled off a big first-round upset over Fremont, but nobody would be surprised if they had an even deeper march in this year’s playoffs. In two region games against No. 1 American Fork, Pleasant Grove lost by only eight points both times, and it was right in the mix fourth quarter.

Riverton Silverwolves (17-5)

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Viewmont in 5A quarterfinals

Edward’s evaluation: Riverton is always a threat in the playoffs. Regardless of that fact, it finished third in Region 4 and lost both games to American Fork and Pleasant Grove. In the preseason it beat West, Bingham and Taylorsville, and has the talent to make another deep run.

Roy Royals (10-11)

2015 postseason: Did not qualify

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Bingham in 5A first round

Edward’s evaluation: Beat Mountain Crest and Clearfield in the last two regular season games to force a Region 1 play-in game on Saturday. Roy beat Northridge by 16 in the first meeting, and lost by one point in the second one. The Royals are the favorite to clinch the No. 4 seed from Region 1, and in the first round they have the potential to cause trouble for favored Bingham with a strong defense.

Sky View Bobcats (18-3)

2015 postseason: Loss to Layton in 5A championship, 73-65

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to American Fork in 5A championship

Edward’s evaluation: In the preseason, Sky View lost three of its first five games — all against the top three juggernauts in 4A. Since those losses though, Sky View has been on a roll, including wins over Bingham, Copper Hills and Fremont. Sky View was a runner-up to Layton last season, and with the No. 2 scoring offense in 5A it figures to make another deep run in the playoffs, and perhaps get over the hump.

Taylorsville Warriors (14-7)

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Fremont in 5A first round

Edward’s evaluation: With the No. 2 scoring defense in 5A, Taylorsville has ability to keep most games close — which it did most nights in region play. Despite that defense, it was never able to get over the hump in two region losses to both Copper Hills and Bingham. It will hope to alter that trend in an intriguing first-round game against Fremont.

Viewmont Vikings (18-3)

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Bingham in 5A quarterfinals

Edward’s evaluation: Earned a share of the title in Region 2, one of the most unpredictable regions in the entire state each night. With one of the top scoring offenses and defense in 5A, and two of the top scorers in 5A with Mercedes Staples and Megan Carr, the Vikings are hoping to make some noise deep into the playoffs — unlike last year when they lost in the first round.

Edward’s Evaluation: It was a rough preseason for West, but it returned to full strength in time for Region 2 play and ultimately earned a share of the Region 2 title. It beat Layton 70-44 in its last game of the regular season, and is a team that nobody wants to play in the playoffs.
