IN ABSENTIA The West Coast Conference announced its preseason women’s soccer all-conference team, last week. Among the first-team selections was BYU defender Paige Hunt. Which must have been a surprise to her, since she is currently serving an LDS Church mission in Indianapolis. No word on whether they’ll be presenting her a plaque at the next zone conference.
BYU football coach Bronco Mendenhall called out Utah media, Friday, inviting them to participate in the Ice Bucket Challenge.
The objective was to raise awareness of ALS and/or promote Thursday’s Heroes, a charity Mendenhall and his wife founded. Reading off a cue card, Mendenhall mentioned two sets of media members. But he slightly mispronounced KSL-5’s Rod “Zippy” Zundel (“Zun-dell”), Fox-13’s Jeff Rhineer (“Ray-neer”) and stumbled over KUTV-2’s Adam Mikulich.
Fortunately he never got around to challenging ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio or Gene Wojciechowski.
Metta World Peace, formerly Ron Artest, plans to change his name again for his move to the Chinese Basketball Association.
Reports say he’ll now answer to The Panda’s Friend.
Too bad. Rock On was hoping for something more imaginative, like Once Served Kobe.
The University of Utah has numerous intriguing figures on its football team this year, but none more than Ryan Petersen.
He’s the MVP of the MUSS’s annual flag football game.
Kyle Whittingham noticed him, and now Petersen is a walk-on with the big boys’ team. Sources say Whittingham next plans to check out the school’s extreme dodgeball and ultimate Frisbee tournaments, just to make sure.
As if there weren’t enough reasons to dislike the Yankees, supermodel Kate Upton recently said she was told by the team not to wear a Detroit hat while watching a game in New York.
Upton, who is dating Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander, said on “Live! With Kelly and Michael!” that “they specifically told me” not to wear Tigers gear.
However, sources say the Bronx Bombers have no objection to LeBron James wearing a Yankees hat at a baseball game in Cleveland.
The Southeastern Conference has eight teams ranked in the top-25 preseason poll, while the Pac-12 has six.
No truth to the rumor the conferences plan to withdraw from the NCAA and start referring to themselves as the “Power Two.”
Model Chrissy Teigen tweeted that she was drunk when she threw out the first pitch at a Dodgers game. Actually, the pitch wasn’t bad.
But at least now there’s a possible excuse for all those other awful celebrity throws.
