The average hotel cost here in Philly is a lot lower than $228/night. It's a lot closer to a per-night stay in Las Vegas.

I know it. I Live it. I Love it.

Average cost and affordability are closely related, but not exactly matching.

Just because the average is $100 doesn't mean you can't find something for less or a bargain on something worth $150. I have found that the destination has far less to do with affordability than the time of year you travel. It isn't a crime to take kids out of school for a week. You'll have a better vacation than if you go during the busy season. Also, Disney isn't a vacation. It's a tourist haven where the dreams of 5 year olds come true then are forgotten. The important vacations are when they are old enough to remember them.

Knowing how to travel is key.

I've booked hotels in about half of these cities and it didn't cost nearly that much. Plan ahead, use Groupon or Kayak or call the hotel directly and see what deals they have. You can pay 1/4-1/2 of these prices for a nice hotel (Marriott or equivalent.) Maybe these are the prices if you just walk in and ask for a room that night? Or the prices listed on the doors of the rooms?

I know it....., it is a crime to take kids out of school when teachers are held accountable for student performance. If students were held accountable for their own performance, then it would be a different matter entirely, but since we are a "pass the buck" society, I respectfully disagree with you.
