With the 2014 high school boys soccer season getting underway last week in what should be another fantastic season, the Deseret News has compiled capsules for every 5A team in the state with information on what to expect this season.

The region rankings are based on preseason coaches' projections. Every coach was invited to participate and submit information on their team.

There are four new head boys soccer coaches in 5A this year: Eric Raine (Hillcrest), Ray Parkhurst (Syracuse), Tom Cushing (Brighton) and Jay Langlois (Jordan).

Davis Owen, senior, forward (captain): The team will rely heavily on him for scoring and leadership. He is the lone senior up top and his athleticism and speed will be a major asset to a young team.

Tyler Bishop, senior, GK (captain): He has stepped into the starting GK position. He is great with his feet and athletic. Has a lot of experience in big games as starting GK on one of the top club teams in the state.

Leading scorer from 2013, Raul Sanchez, returns for his junior year and will be surrounded by a group of fast and talented attackers, including seniors Brayan Cerrato, Alex Cody and Leo Paih. The midfield will be anchored by senior Chris Osborne, who was last year's second leading scorer, and a dynamic sophomore duo of Ryan Wilson and Giovanni Granados. Zui Maung will provide the leadership for a defense that will rebuild after losing Mo Hassan and Nemo Abdi to graduation.

The 2014 Panthers will look to once again navigate their way through an extremely challenging nonregion schedule that includes perennial soccer powers Brighton, Davis, Copper Hills and East before jumping into Region 2 competition.”
