Nov. 20, 1984 — Jerry Sloan is hired as an assistant coach on the Jazz staff by then-head coach Frank Layden.

Dec. 9, 1988— After Layden's abrupt resignation as coach prior to the 17th game of the season, at the Salt Palace against the Dallas Mavericks, Sloan becomes the new Jazz head coach.

Dec. 10, 1988— After losing the night before, Sloan guides the Jazz to his first win as head coach, 110-102, on the road against the L.A. Clippers.

Dec. 12, 1988 — Coach Sloan gets his first win in front of the Jazz home crowd, 110-94 over Miami.

April 22, 1989 — Sloan and the Jazz wrap up the Midwest Division championship, their first since 1984, with a 51-31 record. But Utah is subsequently swept out of the first round of the playoffs by Golden State.

As a high school teacher and an assistant coach I always thought Jerry Sloan set a great example for younger players to look up to. The world needs more men like Jerry. Bob Tanner.
