Week 12 college football bowl projections

Published: Tuesday, Nov. 19 2013 3:19 p.m. MST

Week 12 of the college football season has come and gone while producing upsets across the country. With only a couple of weeks left in the season, it's make or break time for teams, if they want to land a bowl game.

In-state teams BYU (7-3) and Utah State (6-4) are bowl eligible by winning the required six games. BYU has already accepted an invitation to play in the Fight Hunger Bowl against a yet-to-be-determined Pac-12 team on Dec. 27, in San Francisco.

According to the national media, BYU's opponent is still up in the air. While many believe BYU will play the Washington Huskies, many things could change. Any of those changes could send USC, Oregon State or Arizona the Cougars' way.

While Utah State is bowl eligible, the Aggies are still unsure where they will be playing in December. Many national pundits have different views on who and where the Aggies will be playing. The two most likely places seem to be Hawaii or San Diego.

Utah (4-6) faces a tough test if it wants to become bowl eligible. The Utes will have to win their remaining two games against fellow Pac-12 teams Colorado and Washington State. Although it will be tough, at least one national prognosticator still believes the Utes will be bowling this year.

Here is a look at where the prognosticators think the local teams are headed and who they will be playing.

Getting bowl eligible is far from a done deal for Utah. Washington State is much improved, having just beaten Arizona in Tucson, and at 5-5 will be fighting to become bowl eligible themselves; and Colorado, as we saw a couple of years ago in RES, is hardly a given.

Odds are, the Utes only have about a 30% chance of bowling this year.

@phantomblade
How did you ascertain 30%, throw some spaghetti on the wall and that was the percentage that stuck? Did you read some pudit somewhere that gave them those odds?

My Prediction:

After losing next week to the WSU Cougars in Pullman, WA, the Utes will then play the now meaningless Rumble in My Tummy...er, Rumble in The Rockies vs. Colorado. Should they lose especially badly to WSU, they may lose vs Colorado as well, having lost their moxie.

Finally, they'll attend their second annual Couch Potato Bowl, where in a magical Christmas twist all their ifs and buts from this past season will change to candy and nuts and all will have a Merry Christmas.

These goodies will also help lessen the blow for Kyle Whittingham, who after two such losses (and consequently two lousy years) may be unemployed and looking for a bit of Christmas cheer.

Cool Cat Cosmo..How does it feel to know that BYU has only beat Utah 3 times in the last 12 years?

How does it feel to know that Utah hasn't beaten ASU since 1978?

Yeh we beat byu again and that is more awsome than a bowl game because it makes us feel good that we can keep reminding byu that we beat them again so we keep reminding them again after we lose to other teams.

Go Utes!

Jenny83,
Utah had two good wins but not a great season! I would love for BYU to have do overs against Virginia and Utah but we can't so we have moved on and are going bowling unlike Utah!!! It will be interesting to watch the next two years when Utah continues to be at the bottom of the PAC12 and no wins against BYU to crow about!!! What will you do with a four year no bowling streak? As much as I hate losing to Utah and having to hear about it from all the BYU haters, I would rather lose and go bowling and have a great season then beat Utah and sit at home during bowling season!!!

Go BYU Rise Up!!!

The losses with virginia and utah are terrbile losses... byu had big wins this season but maybe even worse losses to those two teams. oh well, bowling in san fran will give the uties something to watch! Hey look we beat that team who beat washington so we beat washington too!

Problem for Utah is that even if they do with their last two games and become bowl eligible, there is no contracted bowl spot for the 10th-place team in the Pac-12. If there is a bowl that has room because a conference couldn't fill their spot, there are still several teams in the SEC and Pac-12 to take before the Utes. Not looking good even if they do win last two games.

@ Jenny83:

Unfortunately for U, should my prediction come true, having beaten BYU will NOT help Whit keep his job.

And in response to your question, not too bad, seeing as BYU has continued to fight hard and has an exciting bowl game to look forward to...a bit of a stretch for the U at this point.

@Cool Cat Cosmo - Whit won't lose his job this year. He has done just enough to save it. The Utes will win this week and move on to their winter vacation. Next year Whit better produce or it will be an issue. It appears that we will see how the Cougars would stack up playing a consistent PAC 12 schedule as they will be playing a 6th Place PAC 12 team. If they lose to a 6th place PAC 12 team, the BYU fans are not going to be able to crow about how wonderful their team is or how much their team has improved. After losses to Wisconsin and Notre Dame, I think the bowl game will be a true indicator of where their program really is.
