High school football: Felt's Facts Week 12, the playoffs

The first full weekend of playoff action again emphasized the mismatches that have characterized early-round games. Of the 32 contests, 18 were decided by three or more touchdowns and only five by a TD or less.

Still, some results surprised prep fans, notably Pleasant Grove knocking off previously undefeated Davis and Lone Peak ousting Syracuse as an indicator of Region 4’s prowess. For the first time since 2008, a team from Region 1 won’t be competing in the championship game. The 1999 season was the last time that no school currently in Region 1 advanced past the first round.

This year, including the first-round games in 2A a couple of weeks ago, the home team has gone home happy 25 of 36 times, and, arguably, three of the 11 visiting squads that won were favored.
