In a somewhat surprising move, the Utah Jazz signed free agent veteran Lucas. One reason it was so surprising is the Jazz passed on last year's backup Jamaal Tinsley. The Jazz obviously like what they see in John Lucas and feel that he will be a great mentor to Trey Burke.

During the 2011-2012 season, Lucas played an NBA career-best 49 games (two starts) and averaged 7 points, 2 assists, 1.6 rebounds in 14 minutes. Lucas shot 39 percent behind the arc (27th in the NBA) and 87 percent from the line. He led the team in scoring six times and in assists on five occasions. Lucas scored 10 or more points in 15 games, including four games with more than 20-plus points.
