From BCS wins to stunning Stanford: Utah's top 10 wins

Utah’s win over No. 5 Stanford is the biggest win for the Utes ever in Salt Lake City. Coming into the game, Utah had yet to win a Pac-12 game this season and since joining the conference in 2011 had only managed to go 7-13 against Pac-12 teams.

The Utes needed a win. They didn’t just need a win, they needed a statement win that would send a message to recruits, fans and the rest of the Pac-12 that they deserve to be in the conference. As Travis Wilson took a knee and time expired at Rice-Eccles Stadium, fans rushed the field and the Utes had made their mark for the future, beating Stanford 27-21.

This isn’t the first time the Utes have managed to announce themselves on a national stage. Throughout the past decade and beyond, the Utes have played some pretty miraculous games that have helped push the program to a bigger and brighter future. Here are the top 10 games for the Utes:

Contenders? Nope.

So far we have proven we can compete in the PAC-12, but we still have to prove that we can win on the road. Which is not an easy task in the PAC-12 with 4-5 road games.

"As ASU scored a field goal in the fourth quarter with only four minutes left in the game, Utah needed a big play. Utah kick returner Cal Beck answered the call, returning the ensuing kick-off to the ASU 5-yard line."

ASU is not Arizona. Pretty sure if either of their fanbases read this, you just insulted them both, Alex.

"Utah paved the way for Boise State, Hawaii and TCU to follow in their steps to break the BCS system and prove that there are programs that deserve a chance at greatness."

And Hawai'i and Northern Illinois proved that some teams really don't deserve the chance.

Alex is correct, Utah played the University of Arizona, not ASU, in the 1994 Freedom Bowl.

UtesBy5, the text in the article was changed after I commented. My comment was copied and pasted from the original, which read "ASU," not Arizona. I realize Utah played Arizona in the 1994 Freedom Bowl, that is why I pointed out that Rasmussen made the mistake of saying "ASU," when it was Arizona. Had I not said anything, it would probably still be incorrect now.

I made one of these lists this summer and this list isn't too different than my own. It wasn't easy to find many marquee wins on past schedules. Most of the ones I included were bowl wins and wins during 2004 and 2008 against TCU and BYU. What this list lacked was the big win at Michigan in 2008 which I had at number eight. The nice thing is Utah will have plenty of opportunities for marquee wins in hte future.

The Stanford win might eclipse the win over Alabama. Utah and Alabama were similarly ranked programs when they met and Alabama's dominance came the next four years after the Utes took them to the woodshed. Utah was ranked about 40th when they beat number 5 Stanford. If Stanford runs the table and plays in the National Championship, I'd move the Stanford game to the top position.
