BYU and Utah State both enter this year's rivalry contest looking to earn a much-needed victory.

The Cougars, a rare underdog, need the win to get above .500 for the first time this season. The Aggies would like to use a victory as a springboard to success in their final nonconference game of the year.

Here's a look at the matchup and what is at stake in Friday night's contest.

The stakes

For Utah State … The Aggies are favored, and hungry for a win over an in-state rival in their final nonconference game of the season.

For BYU … The Cougars are looking for an in-state victory and need a win to enhance their chances of finishing the season bowl-eligible.

The trends

For Utah State … Over the past three games, the Aggies have outscored the Cougars, 58-49.

For BYU … The Cougars have lost to USU just twice in the last 20 years, with setbacks in 1993 and 2010. Both losses happened in Logan. BYU has won 12 of the last 13 meetings.

The edge

Utah State will win if … The Aggies force the Cougars to throw the ball, and quarterback Chuckie Keeton can make big plays against the BYU defense.

BYU will win if … The Cougars can run the ball, avoid turnovers and avoid third-and-long situations. BYU needs to find ways to score touchdowns in the red zone.

Player to watch

Taysom Hill, BYU: In last week’s victory over Middle Tennessee, Hill completed 14 of 19 passes. Can he continue to be consistent and accurate with his passing?

Key matchup

BYU’s front seven vs. Utah State quarterback Chuckie Keeton: Keeton is an experienced, dual-threat QB that could give the Cougar secondary trouble.

Injury report

Utah State: Senior right guard Kyle Whimpey is out for the season after suffering a knee injury last week. Running back Joe Hill (leg) is listed as day to day. Defensive end Connor Williams (foot) is questionable.

BYU: BYU running back Jamaal Williams, who suffered a concussion two weeks ago against Utah, is expected to play in a somewhat limited role. Linebacker Tyler Beck (hamstring) is day to day. Brock Stringham (shoulder) and Ryker Mathews (hip) are also expected to play. Running back/kick returner Adam Hine (concussion) and offensive lineman De’Ondre Wesley (concussion) are doubtful.
