Bowl projections roundup: BYU, Utah State postseason locks; Utah earns vote for Poinsettia Bowl

Published: Monday, Aug. 26 2013 6:32 p.m. MDT

The 2013 college football season is just days away from beginning, and national media publications are cranking out stories leading up to kickoff.

Among those hyped-up articles are bowl predictions for the 2013 postseason.

According to the national media, both BYU and Utah State are locks to make the postseason in 2013; in six recently published articles, the Cougars and Aggies were predicted to go bowling every time.

Utah, which missed going to the postseason last year for the first time since 2002, did receive one writer's pick to make a bowl. The other prognosticators are guessing the Utes will be home again for the holidays.

Who are the local teams predicted to meet in bowl games this season, and where will they be headed?

No surprise.

BYU and Utah State LOCKS across the board for bowl games.

The lowly 3rd best team in the state projected by 5 of 6 prognosticators to be playing in the couch potato bowl, again.

I guess the Orlando Sentinel does not know about the train wreck on the hill. They should get out more. BYU and USu are no-brainers for a bowl. I guess we now know what the national media thinks about Utah.

My perfect Christmas present:

for BYU to beat the U of U, and then for the Utes to barely make the bowl season, only to play BYU in a rematch in the Kraft Bowl...and for BYU to beat them AGAIN!

Give me a Break... Utah has been competitive both seasons in the PAC12 defensively, finishing
near the middle in Total Defense and last year 2nd against the run in a down year for the Utes.
How many games did Ute fans watch thinking that if they could have made a few 1st Downs... the
outcome could have clearly been different. Make no mistake that USU is a very good team. But last year needed OT at home to beat Utah and the Utes had a TD called back in the OT. Utah played an awful game with a Division 2 QB... and still should have won on the road. Ths years game is in Salt Lake where the Aggies havent won in 25 years or something. Utahs going to make a lot more 1st downs this year and beat some people they are not supposed to beat. 31-17 over USU Thursday and Utes win 7 or maybe 8 to earn a Bowl. Aggies still win 8 and challenge for MWC title.

Coo Cat Cosmo: That was funny! But it won't happen. The NCAA frowns on a return matchup for a bowl game.

Yeah, talkinsports. It has nothing to do with Utah having a top 10 SOS why only one of these so called experts picked the Utes to go bowling. Thank goodness we are close to really finding out who's 3rd best in the state rather than hear fans like you tell us. (Although, coug fans would still consider Utah 2nd best even if they swept their in state opponents, considering they haven't stopped ragging on Utah despite losing 3 in a row)

All six predictions have BYU going to the Kraft Bowl. (I guess that means they won't be playing for the national championship.) With BYU's schedule everyone sees them winning the required 6 games (or more). But with that - they are locked into the Kraft Bowl. So why play the season? No suspense.
What I thought was of most interest was of the 6 projections - 4 different PAC-12 teams were projected to be their opponent - with no team getting more than 2 "votes". Now that is parity and provides interest in almost every league game, every week. Now I can only hope Utah can be in the bowl mix come next December!

Panama, BYU played UCLA in the Vegas bowl a few years back after playing them during the season and then played them again the first game of the next season.

I guess for Utah it is just an honor to be a punching bag for the rest of the PAC.

@Mesa Coug:

Just an honor to be a punching bag...! That's exactly what you guys said to the Vandals after a mighty beat down in Happy Valley! And winning an actual game against the Utes would really help strenghten the trash talking! Making it 4 in a row will be sweet indeed! GO UTES

The Utes have more PAC - 12 Parades than they do PAC -12 victories.
