Commentary: The best University of Utah quarterbacks of the last 35 years

Published: Wednesday, Aug. 14 2013 4:05 p.m. MDT

The journey from WAC-also-ran to BCS buster and finally to a member of the Pac-12 has been a long and arduous one for the University of Utah football team. The roller-coaster ride the Utes have endured over the last 35 years includes six coaches and a lot of tough seasons.

It has also included a few great teams and a number of very talented quarterbacks. This list ranks the best of those quarterbacks — the ones who were a huge part of the Utes finding their way to the top of the national rankings and a home in one of the most prestigious conferences in the country.

The rankings are based solely on what each quarterback did while at the University of Utah and not what they did in the NFL.

Here are the 10 greatest quarterbacks for the Utes over the last 35 years.

Note: Each player's stats include bowl games

"Smith ended his Utah career throwing for 5,203 yards and 47 touchdowns with only eight interceptions while rushing for 1,094 yards and 15 more scores."

Impressive. By comparison,

After red-shirting behind Marc Wilson in 1979, McMahon ended his Junior SEASON throwing for 4,571 yards and 47 touchdowns and rushing for an additional 6 touchdowns.

Over the course of his two seasons as a BYU starter, McMahon threw for 8,126 yards and 77 touchdowns while winning 23 of 26 games. McMahon also destroyed the Utes 56-6 and 56-28.

Full respect to BYU's 1984 team, they would have only lost to the Utes 2004 team by 3 touchdowns.

Just the FAX,

Clearly Jim McMahon was a great college quarterback. I'd LOVE to have him slinging it for my Utes. But remember, in 2004, Smith only threw 4 interceptions while throwing for 32 touchdowns and running for 10. McMahon threw 18 picks while amassing 47 touchdowns threw the air and 6 on the ground.

-----------

If the Utes are going to have any success in the PAC 12, they are going to need better QBs in the future.

Haters gotta hate and jealous trollers have to live in the 80s.

I loved watching the highlights of the 2009 Sugar Bowl against the daunting offense and defense of the Crimson Tide. The only Crimson Tide that day rolled out of the Wasatch! That TD to Casteel is still etched in my brain. Something that Just the FAX and Don't Feed the Trolls will never get to experience!!

Go Utes!!

Never is such a strong and final word. I believe me cougars will experience that. Seeing that crystal ball trophy in the Hall at BYU is etched in my memory too. I would never say never, but Utah's chances of ever seeing that trophy in their case are about as good as BYU ever experiencing a win in a BCS or "playoff" game right? Never is so unempowering. Lets leave it at this: while BYUs chances of winning a "playoff" game and Utah's chances of having a crystal NC trophy are slim, there's still a always a chance. Doesn't that sound better? Good luck utes, and GO COUGS!

As a BYU fan I hate it when Ute fans/trolls comment on BYU articles; so why are BYU fans commenting on a column talking about Ute QBs?
