Ute football: Breaking down Utah's post-spring depth chart

Published: Friday, May 10 2013 8:34 a.m. MDT

Nickelback Next » 17 of 19 « Prev
Listed starters: Joseph Smith OR Michael Walker

The nickelback position is another area where Utah lost a lot of depth from 2012 to 2013. Joe Smith and Michael Walker are both upperclassmen, but neither boast significant achievements as members of the Utah defense.

Perhaps Smith and Walker's brightest moment was the 2011 rivalry game — also known as "The Blowout" — in which Utah completely emptied its bench near the end of the game. Walker made a tackle behind the line of scrimmage against the Cougars.

Still, it's as yet unknown what these players can bring to the table over the course of a Pac-12 season. Stay tuned to this position come fall.

I see a struggle coming for the utes this season...again. Maybe they'll surprise me. Hopefully for any 'u' fan's sake. Final predictions for the coming season: utes 5-7. Cougars 12-1 if the offense can get it together. 10-3 if they can't.

Kenneth SCOTT, Landon, not Stott.

And "Utah's linebacking group has a well-earned reputation for stopping the run, but will it improve this year in stopping the pass as well?"

Last year's linebackers earned a reputation of not stopping anything. Seeing what Ka'Deem Carey did to them last year, it would have been scary to see what Kenjon Barner would have done. We may have been better off having 6 defensive linemen and 5 defensive backs on every play.

Poutasi is a rising sophomore, not a senior.

maq, how on Earth did you come up with that prediction?? BYU's 1996 team may not have gone 10-3 against the Cougars' schedule this year, let alone 12-1.

Drum and Feather

We have more talent and depth than any other team in the PAC 12.

West Valley, Utah

That must be why the u is consistantly at the top of the pac 12 south standings.

West Valley, Utah

My apologies I was misinformed. utah finished 2011 3rd in the south and tied for 6th overall and 2012 5th in the south and 9th overall. Not at the top like I previously mentioned. Ouch. Go Ducks!

Drum and Feather is a BYU fans pretending to be a Utah fan.

Also, I would bet my house that BYU does not have a ten win season.

@ Notre Dame

Realistically, BYU could lose all of those games. Right now I see only 3 for sure wins with Virginia, Houston, and Idaho St. MTSU and GT, will probably be wins as well, but both of those teams have a pulse so who knows?

The blue Kool-Aide is flowing in utah county where the PRE-season trophy case is on the verge of bursting. Here's a poll I recently came across--

How many wins will BYU finish with in 2013?

1. 12 - undefeated

8% (353)

2. 9-11

52% (2224)

3. 7-8

30% (1267)

4. 6 or fewer

10% (416)

Total Votes: 4260

Ka'Deem Carey blew-up virtually every team they faced last season, including Stanford's stingy Rush-D. He was, after-all, the nation's rushing leader.

Thanks for the feedback on the stuff I messed up on. I have since fixed the errors, so I'm grateful you guys caught them.

More than anything, I hope you enjoy the coverage we're giving to Utes football. The fact that people are commenting is evidence enough for me.

Thanks guys.

Please disregard Maq comments... Apparently he missed the last few years of poor Cougar play. If we can get 8 wins, it will be a huge success.... Likewise, in my eyes, if the Utes can get 8 wins it would be a huge success.

I'm just happy Joseph Smith is on our side!

Who am I sir?

I think you might be able to move the MTSU from a possible BYU win to a probable BYU win. MTSU was ranked 106th on one of the preseason polls. That is the type football programs BYU has been able to build their reputation on! The past few seasons BYU has been able to beat the teams they were expected to be able to beat and lost to those ranked higher. If that hold true to next year Texas, Wisconsin and ND are ranked significantly higher than the Y. Also Georgia Tech (36th) and Boise State (38th) were grouped together with BYU (39th). Utah was only ranked 60th, so BYU should be favored (at home) but I like our chances!! As for "maq"'s prophecy, Let me in on some of that action!

We still have to wait 3 1/2 months! I had a conversation with my bro in law about having football year round in CFB and the NFL. It would be easy, you just create an A team and a B team so players aren't dead when it's all over and have an annual and semi-annual championship. Do it for the fans! Lol

I agree with capt cougar I think 8 wins would be a success for both programs with much tougher schedules for both this year.

There's a nice article on The U's Athletic Website regarding those players we've placed into The NFL. As of yesterday, we have 35 players currently on NFL rosters. Good times.

Yea putting a ute homer in charge of ute coverage is about how the dnews works these days. And by the way you get comments because of the delusional assertions in the "article", that part is definately entertaining if not outright funny.

BTW, it's Uaea Masina, not Uaea Mesina.

@ earlofhemsley

Looks like your article ruffled some duck feathers! LOL after 3 in a row, I guess it doesn't take much.

Thanks for the coverage on the Utes.

Are you really going to sit there are pretend that Harmon, Call, and Gurney aren't BYU homers?

Nice article with a lot of familiar names. If Wilson plays well and the defense does their part, 8-9 wins is very realistic. Considering the schedule, I would be happy with that. The PAC 12 is a very tough conference, just behind the SEC.

Nice list Earl, enjoyed the great detail about the position battles. Here's my list on your list:

1. HOpe the O-line is as strong as it sounded in the article, opening holes for JohnWhite's heir, whoever that ends up being.

2. Starting QB being pushed by a new kid on campus means either the starter did not light coach's fire, or we have a bonafide hot one as backup, like Alex Smith was. Hope its the latter.

3. You just had to remind us how Chuckie K made us look so slow last year...

4. UTE FB programs this year should include a Polynesian name pronunciation guide at the end.

5. 2013 records: UTES 8-4, then win at LV bowl. Cougs 7-5, bowl win at NM bowl.

PS. This year, UTES 33 Cougs 21

I'm with duckhunter. The Deseret News is a total ute homer newspaper. They are always way to negative about byu and way to positive of utah.

Nice! I could live with that!

Actually the power rankings have the Big 12 2nd and the PAC 12 3rd, and both conferences distantly behind the SEC (of course im a Georgia fan too so Im a little biased). But you are right, the PAC is a tough conference right now, much tougher than a lot of people realized when Utah joined. Hopefully Utah can have success and bring home some hardware...and yes as a BYU fan but not ute hater I do hope for that.

Since 2000 PAC 12 teams are right at .500 vs the SEC. I'm sure you know what happened to georgia the last time they went to Boulder. I like the way several SEC teams schedule, especially Bama, Tennessee and Georgia, but Florida hasn't played a non conference game out of state in over 20 years. You are right about the rankings, but I believe the PAC 12 was 2 in one of them. Anyway, thanks for the civil and positive response. Take care guy.

Spokane Ute:

ESPN ranked the Pac-12 as the 2nd-best conference during the last half of the 2012 season, until we flopped in the postseason, thus allowing us to be overtaken by the Big 12.

That said, the last time I recall the Pac-10/12 ranked ahead of the Big 12 in Football was back when USC was winning the national championship, so it's been a while.

Thanks for the in sight, I thought that the PAC 12 and Big 12 were neck and neck last year. A top 3 conference is tough, any way you cut it.

If this was the work of Ernest T or Mildred it'd be funny. Otherwise it's possibly the dumbest thing ever posted.
