How did my high school alma mater, the Jordan Beet Diggers not make this list?

Arizona Sundogs is a good one to add to the list.

How about the Freeport IL Pretzels?
Or the Hampshire IL Whippurs (for White and Purple, I think)?

Suddenly the Dinos name is not so unusual...

My Alma Mater Star Valley High School in Afton, Wyoming were called the Cheese Makers, when my grandpa went to high school. The students voted to change the name to the Braves somewhere around the late 1930's or early 1940's. The Cheese Makers name came from the long rich history of the Star Valley Cheese Factory in Thayne, that is now sadly closed. When I was going to high school in the mid 1990's people would still try to degrade us, by calling us Cheese Makers. I actually wouldn't mind if they decided to change it back to the Cheese Makers, I think it would be one of the most unique mascots in the country.

My mother grew up in Star Valley and always talked about the Cheese Makers, even though she graduated from Granite. Speaking of Star Valley Cheese... Ummmmm Star Valley Cheeeese...

Yea, what about the Beat Diggers?

I taught at Delta State University for 6 years and was proud to wear the Fighting Okra. I still laugh at it when I see my sweatshirts, ties, t-shirts, hats....yeah, I kind of bought into it.

Didn't the Highland High student body originally adopt a nickname like the "Convicts" or "Criminals" because their school was built on the site of the old State Prison? As I recall, the school board or District or some governing body overturned that, but they went with the black and white colors because of the old black and white stripped uniforms the prisoners used to wear.

I think the Beet Diggers should definitely make this list (but if you went with Beat Diggers, it might be hip and modern:-)).

Others from our state that I think are odd or funny (although not necessarily worthy of this list) are:

Delta Rabbits (Rabbits are so ferocious)

Davis Darts (As I understand this they are a verb and not a noun. Their players are so dominating that they dart around the opposition, not the sharp pointy things you throw at a dart board or your brother)

Utah Jazz (since there is such a rich, ethnically influenced music history in Utah)

The Corner Canyon Chargers (not because it is so unusual, but because of the controversy over the desire not to offend middle-aged women by going with Cougars, which the students voted for)

Everyone loves the mystique of the dinosaur age. When you visit the dinosaur displays in the Price area, you will be mesmerized. We have found petrified raptor teeth while camping in the desert for Easter vacation. Also, 3 foot diameter dinosaur footprints harvested from ceiling of coal mines... of course this was before the mechanized mining machinery that now destroys these prints.

Carbon Dino's mascot sounds like it could trample on Provo bulldogs, but Carbon high football team was the notorious door-mat to the bulldogs.

@ Parry is a Farce,

I am a alumni of Davis High School. You are partially right about how Davis became the Darts. The story I heard from a former teacher of mine at Davis was the following: Back in the 1920's or 1930's Davis had a really fast football player. Everyone said he "darted around" so the name stuck and to this day they are the "Darts". If that is not the correct story, I would love to hear the correct one from any Davis High Alumni who might know.

What about the Shelley Idaho Russets or the Sugar Salem, Idaho Diggers?
