Michigan State took on Indiana State led by future hall of famers Earvin 'Magic' Johnson and Larry Bird. Johnson and the Spartans came out victorious pulling off a 75-64 victory.

The game was the highest rated in NCAA tournament history and is credited with introducing a nationwide audience to march madness and vaulting the NCAA tournament to unprecedented popularity.
