Great Job coach Sloan. Its too bad you never got the coach of the year award from the NBA because you deserve it. Good luck to you in your future endeavors. You will be missed in Utah.
Jerry never cared about Coach of the Year. He wanted a title. He never cared about individual accomplishments it was always team first. Thats why I will miss him the most.
Lotsa folks who retire from their jobs do not get a news conference...I think Jerry realizes, hope he does, how fortunate he has been to be in this position. I was simply struck by the amazing influence the Jazz are with the Utah population, and how many people have an oppinion about the coaching of Jerry Sloan. It does seem that some coaches can consistently keep a team near the top of the heap, but never win that championship, while other coaches build a lifetime reputation on winning it once, but sort of flame out afterward, such as Don Haskins, with UTEP/Texas Western. Phil Johnson did a great job at Weber State. Best of luck in the future to each of them.
We moved to southern Utah in the fall of 1988, just before Sloan was named head coach. I used to travel often up to Salt Lake City in the evening and would listen to the Jazz game on the radio, fading in and out (no XM radio then), between Price and Spanish Fork--Stockton, Malone playing, Sloan coaching and Hot Rod Hundley broadcasting the game. None of them with the Jazz anymore. I live nearly 600 miles from SLC but we get FSN-Utah and I never miss a game. And I plan to keep watching. Great organization, good team, and I'll still be fan--hopefully, Ty Corbin will bring Hornacek on as an assistant coach. And hopefully the Jazz will finish out the season strong and make some noise in the playoffs. Go Jazz!!!! You'll always be my team.
