A truth test for Jim Matheson and Mia Love: Digging into the political claims

Is anyone watching these ads anymore? Its the same thing over and over again from both candidates.

The Matheson camp is playing loosely with words to make Love's record seem to be bad. The reality listed in these checks show that there is no real substance to any of the claims. A pay raise of $200/month to a total of $800 dollars is not much considering the pay for school superintendents and other officials in the Government. Matheson gets much more from the tax payers and does not help as many as Love does, in her community.

The claim: Deseret News treats its on-line readers like children by spooling out these claims like teasers, one click per allegation.
I suppose that would be OK if you set up a comment board for each of the 12 claims. Otherwise it's just 12 hooks to be reeled in one at a time.

Matheson didn't vote for Pelosi last time. What makes you think he would vote for her this time?

He doesn't have to make her look bad, every time she makes a statement not written by her republican handlers
she looks bad. Mia is exactly like Palin NOT ready for primetime not ready to answer big girl questions and so like Biden not wanting to appear mean to Sarah. So now Jim is mean just for being informed about his job. Something Jason and Mike still haven't figured out.

This has been a difficult contest to decide between. Several in my Riverton neighborhood had an ad hoc discussion last week about it and decided that Lee Benson's article last week has decided our votes. Interesting process, but when voters are trying to decide what the truth is, apparently we all believed Lee when we couldn't decide between the candidates.

Here's what I can't figure out--if Matheson is so independent, why doesn't he become an independent? His very presence as a Democrat aided and abetted Pelosi by giving her party a majority in Congress. And it was Pelosi, Reid, and Obama that together gave us Obamacare and the staggering rise in deficits and debt.

I think Matheson has done a good job in his current district, but I'm currently undecided now that he's in my district (I'm kind of a right-leaning independent). I believe there should be more balance between the two parties in Utah though - i.e. more Dems, especially at the state level.

One person who knows more about politics than I do said that Matheson usually waits until he knows whether the Democrats need his vote or not. If they don't need his vote, he then votes with the Republicans just so Utahans will think he's conservative. Supposedly he has the full support of Democrats to do this in order to keep winning elections in conservative Utah.

I would like to know if this is really true or not. Does anyone out there have any info?

I have watched Matheson a little over the years. He wasn't my rep, so I haven't tracked everything, but my take is that when he votes with the Republicans it is always when his vote wouldn't matter.
My favorite example of him supporting Pelosi came 2 years ago. You might remember when the House was voting on whether or not to extend the Bush tax cuts. Obama wanted part of the cuts kept, the Republicans wanted all of them kept. The mid-term election adjournment was coming up. The Republicans wanted to stick it out until something came together, Pelosi didn't want to. At stake wasn't just the tax cuts, but a public statement of where each Representative stood on this isue. In the end, the vote to adjourn was 210-209, Matheson voted with Pelosi. That time his vote mattered, and he showed he would stick with Pelosi when his vote actually mattered.

A news item today caught my eye. It reported that Sarah Palin's PAC donated some money (not much) to Mia Love's campaign.

Then it went on to say that Sarah had collected $833,900 from donors. They handed out $54,500. The remaining $779,400 is what they are calling "expenses."

Hey, Sarah is a staunch supporter of "Free Enterprise" isn't she?

But does she have any idea what the word "Honesty" means?

Just one day before the vote on Obamacare, Matheson announced he would vote against it. He waited until then because his constituents were overwhelmingly against it, but he had his party to satisfy. Finally, when it was clear the bill would pass (barely) without his vote, he announced he was against it.

His vote didn't make any difference, which he knew at the time, but it's helping him now in this election. But if the democrats needed his vote, he would have voted for it, it's clear. Otherwise, why would he wait until the last minute to announce his intentions?

Mia Love is treated by many so-called pundits as a person that is not as high level as they are.

The Utah Legislators and GOP party people appear to have done that in Utah for a long time. Democrat women run for office. Republican women, if they surface, are not treated as equals and pay the price in how they are treated as an elected official.

Strong women in Utah are not supposed to run for office, it appears, and we as Utah citizens are given less with how the Legislature treats all of us. Women have a special talent we don't take advantage of in how they handle governmental affairs. They have raised our children, have advanced degrees, are given leadership positions in various organizations. However, people's treatment of Mia Love isn't much different from the common treatment of women in Utah.

She meets the qualifications of a Representative in Congress and just as almost every new Representative will have some growing pains but will learn and do the right thing for her constituents. Representative Matheson has shown his chameleon colors and we know who he is. He could have had a legacy but not.

Jim did wait until his vote meant nothing. If he was truly against abama care he would have come out much earlier and said how he was voting. He got a free pass to vote no.
