I supervise the Deseret News editorial page, as well as write editorials on general topics and a weekly column on local government issues along the Wasatch Front. The column runs each Sunday.

Vitae:
I graduated from Brigham Young University in 1983 with a B.A. in journalism and a minor in Scandinavian Studies.

My previous work experience includes eight years as a Deseret News reporter covering the state capitol, city hall, and sports business beats; three years as a government, police, and consumer reporter for the Las Vegas Review-Journal; six months as the sports editor of the Clinton, Oklahoma Daily News and a summer as an intern for UPI in New York City. During my career I have won several awards, both locally and regionally, for reporting, feature writing and editorial writing.

I also have taught several advanced journalism and editorial writing courses at Weber State University.

In 1992 I was a fellow at the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism at the University of Maryland.

I also am the immediate past president of the Utah Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and am director of SPJ's Region IX, which includes Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and parts of Texas.
