Steven McGrath scored from distance in the sixth minute, and the third-ranked Darts survived from there to hoist the 5A championship trophy. The Darts never really settled down offensively in Thursday's title game but got fantastic contributions from their backline and goalkeeper to keep No. 5 Fremont off the scoreboard.
FIRST HALF
1st minute: The final high school soccer game of the season is underway here at Rio Tinto Stadium, with Region 1 powers Davis and Fremont squaring off with each other to determine the 5A champion.6th minute: DAVIS GOAL! The Darts surge ahead. From the right side, Jake Mcrae, who's enjoying an amazing postseason, cuts the ball out to stopper Steven McGrath at the top of the 18-yard box. McGrath strides into the ball and buries his shot off the Fremont goalie's hands and into the net.
21st minute: Halfway through the first half, both teams seem to have settled in pretty nicely here. Davis has maybe had slightly more play, but Fremont has looked awfully dangerous at times and has forced the Darts into making some critical defensive stops.
HALFTIME
The first 40 minutes has come to a close here, with Davis clinging literally to a 1-0 lead. Over the final 10-15 minutes of the first half, Fremont grew stronger and stronger, and the Silver Wolves forced the Darts into some frantic clearances. We'll find out whether Davis can regroup in the second half and play better, or whether an equalizer is on the cards.
SECOND HALF
41st minute: The teams have returned to the pitch, and the second half is underway. Can Fremont come back? Will Davis put the game out of reach? Will it stay 1-0 for a while? Stay tuned.
57th minute: Fremont isn't necessarily creating chances, but the Wolves are doing everything else to make life miserable for Davis as we inch toward the halfway point of the second half. It's all still to play for here between these two Region 1 giants.
64th minute: This has turned into a real nail-biter, as Fremont chases the game and Davis tries to hang on to that it's got. The Darts have not played the kind of soccer they've played on a host of occasions this year, but their backline, up to this point, has just been incredible to snuff out potential Fremont opportunities.
75th minute: There are just over five minutes to go in the 5A title game. Five huge minutes. Davis coach Souli Phongsavath just took off one of his forwards and added a second stopper to try to help his team hang on. We shall whether the Darts are successsful.
END OF GAME
Davis survives a nervy, nervy finish to become the champions of Class 5A. The Darts set a state record for fewest goals allowed in a season with four, and their backline was terrific down the stretch to keep Fremont at bay.
