Kam Roundy, Tallen Chynoweth, Korde Chynoweth, Colton Roberts and Eddie Dunham all stepped in the fourth quarter after star Kace Roundy fouled out, and the Bryce Valley Mustangs pulled away in the fourth quarter to pull of the upset and win the school's first state championship in history. Kam Roundy finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Piute star guard Tyson Westwood led all scorers with 25 points.
6:27: Bryce Valley holds the early advantage here, as brothers Kam and Kace Roundy have scored back-to-back buckets to put the Mustangs up, 4-0.
End 1Q: The opening eight minutes have flown by here inside a rocking Sevier Valley Center. So far, both teams, especially Piute, have played very, very right. Just four field goals were made in the opening quarter, and at the end of it, Bryce Valley leads 6-3.
3:22: Tyson Westwood, the venerable star guard for Piute, is clearly sensing the occasion, and he's gotten the T-Birds going in the second quarter. Westwood has scored 11 of Piute's 13 points so far in the second quarter to put the T-Birds on top, 16-12.
1:33: And just like that, Bryce Valley is back on top. Kam Roundy drains a 3, and then Tallan Chynoweth makes a layup one play later to put the Mustangs up by a point, 17-16.
Half: At the end of an intense, tight opening half of basketball, Piute holds a one-point lead over Bryce Valley, 21-20. Tallan Chynoweth drained a 3-pointer with 10 seconds to put the Mustangs up by two, but Kelton Price answered at the other end with a three of his own with three seconds to go.
Westwood has been absolutely stellar for Piute. After missing some tough shots in the first quarter, he came out in the second and drilled a 15-foot jumper over Bryce Valley star Kace Roundy. From there, Westwood went on to score 13 points in the quarter. On the other hand, Bryce Valley has gotten some important contributions from a lot of people. Kam Roundy has hit big shots, Eddie Dunham has played well. The Mustangs will likely need that team play in the second half, as Kace Roundy crucially picked up his third foul right before halftime.
6:15: Bryce Valley has come flying out of the gates in the second half. After Kam Roundy made 1-of-2 free throws, Kace Roundy has scored five consecutive points to put the Mustangs ahead, 26-21.
4:26: Piute has rattled off six points in a row to make the score tied at 27-27. More importantly, Westwood just drew Kace Roundy's fourth foul on a drive to the basket.
End 3Q: Piute leads by a point, 30-29, heading into the all-important fourth quarter, but the Mustangs did a phenomenal job to keep it close after Kace Roundy went to the bench with his fourth foul. Certainly, it's there for the taking by either team at this juncture.
5:46: Kace Roundy was whistled for his fifth foul just 49 seconds into the fourth quarter, but his team has bravely responded since he went back to the bench. Kam Roundy and Colton Roberts just drained huge back-to-back 3-pointers to put Bryce Valley ahead, 38-32.
58.2: There are still 58 huge seconds left, but Bryce Valley is on the verge of a truly epic state championship win. With superstar Kace Roundy on the bench with five fouls, everyone on Bryce Valley's team has played out of their minds to position the Mustangs to pull off something incredible. Score is 50-43 for Bryce Valley right now.
22.1: Bryce Valley leads by 10, 53-43, with just a handful of seconds remaining. Bryce Valley's fans have been erupting over the past several minutes as their team inches closer to its first state championship in school history.
Final: And that's it! Bryce Valley pulls off a most improbable victory to claim its first state championship in school history. Truly an incredible fourth-quarter performance by the Mustangs. Everyone in a Bryce Valley uniform was outstanding in the fourth after star Kace Roundy fouled out with 7:11 to go. Brother Kam Roundy made huge plays in the fourth, as did Tallan Chynoweth, Korde Chynoweth, Colton Roberts and Eddie Dunham.
