Emery outscored Cedar 12-2 in the fourth quarter to pull out a gutsy win at the 3A tournament. Colton Barnett scored 14 points to lead Emery before fouling out because of a clerical error with 2.4 seconds left in the fourth, and his teammates made enough plays without him to advance to the 3A semifinals. Guard Nevin Jensen added 13 points, while Brandon Garrett had 12 points to pace Cedar.
3:16: So far, it's been a back-and-forth affair between Cedar and Emery. Cedar opened with four straight points, Emery responded with four in a row, Cedar had four in a row and then Emery had four in a row to leave us knotted at 8-8 in the early going.
End 1Q: At the end of the first period, Cedar holds a narrow lead over the Spartans. Brandon Garrett and Nolan Foley each have four points so far.
4:40: Emery has ripped off a quick 6-2 to begin the second quarter and leave the score tied at 14-14. Center Colton Barnett has scored all six of those points and is really starting to assert himself down low.
Half: At the break, Cedar leads by four points. The second quarter, as was the case with the first quarter, proved to be a back-and-forth affair, with both teams having their moments. Barnett finished the second quarter with eight points and was stellar for Emery down low. On the other hand, Brandon Garrett scored four points in the second quarter and has eight in the half.
3:05: After a fairly cagey first half, it's gotten even tighter in the third quarter. With just over three minutes to play in the period, each team has scored four points, leaving Cedar with its four-point advantage to work with.
End 3Q: Taylor Ottenbacher made two free throws with 2.4 seconds left in the third quarter to give Cedar a three-point lead going into the final period. There was a huge amount of controversy, however, when the scorekeeper said that Barnett fouled out when he sent Ottenbacher to the line. Emery believed and still believes that Barnett only picked up his fourth foul, but after a lengthy debate about it, it seems as though the official scorekeeper's decision will be final.
3:56: To say that this game has sprung to life would be a massive understatement. Unfortunately, the two referees and the official scorekeeper have been at the center of the action. Both teams have had issues with the officials since Barnett was given his "fifth" foul at the end of the third quarter, and with less than four minutes to go, Cedar is clinging to a two-point lead, 33-31.
2:40: After a pair of free throws by Derek Tuttle, Tanner Procarione made a basket to give the Spartans a two-point lead, 35-33, with under three minutes to go.
Final: Emery guts out a win by outscoring Cedar 12-2 in the fourth quarter to advance to the 3A semifinals. Tuttle and Procarione each made huge plays in the fourth, and guard Nevin Jensen was also big.
