Jaden Seely scored a game-high 16 points and the Tigers jumped on Juan Diego early to advance to the 3A semifinals. In the process, Hurricane's basketball team, which is full of football players, earned a measure of revenge over Juan Diego, which beat Hurricane in heartbreaking fashion in last fall's 3A championship football game. Ajay Pizza had 11 points and guard Brian Curren added 10 for Juan Diego.
4:37 left: Early on, Hurricane has come flying out of the gates in the opening game of the 3A quarterfinals. Jaden Seely scored back-to-back baskets to open the game and the Tigers lead 8-1 with less than four minutes played.
End 1Q: Hurricane played really solid basketball at both ends to take a nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Five different Hurricane players scored points in the opening quarter offensively, while the Tigers kept Juan Diego quiet defensively.
4:49 left: Juan Diego continues to struggle and Hurricane is continuing to play steady and composed basketball. The Tigers pushed their lead out to 17-4 before Juan Diego made one of three free throws at the other end to make the score 17-5.
1:39: Juan Diego star Ajay Pizza scores his first points of the game with 2:39 left in the period as he converts a three-point play, but Seely quickly responds with back-to-back baskets at the other end to make the score 23-8.
Half: At the break, No. 4 Hurricane leads Juan Diego by double digits. Jaden Seely has 10 points to lead all scorers, and he's had plenty of help from his teammates. Meanwhile, Ajay Pizza leads Juan Diego offensively with just three points. The Soaring Eagle will need a much improved performance in the second half to stand a chance of coming back against the Region 9 champs.
5:29: Early on in the second half, it's been more of the same. Anderson Rich converted a three-point play 17 seconds into the period, and after Juan Diego made two free throws at the other end, Hurricane came back down and Jordan Langstron promptly drilled a three. One minute later, Seely hit another basket to push the advantage out to 20 points, 31-11. Hard to see Juan Diego climbing out of this hole.
2:35: Juan Diego has shown signs of life in the past few minutes, as back-to-back baskets by Pizza have been sandwiched in between a field goal by Daniel Milovich. However, Hurricane forward McCrae Vuifanua hit a 3 in the middle of that sequence and then just made another basket to leave the Tigers firmly in control here.
End 3Q: Just when it seemed like an obvious thing to write off Juan Diego, the Soaring Eagle finally sprang to life over the final two minutes of the quarter to potentially make the fourth and final period awfully interesting. Juan Diego rips off an 11-2 run to close the third quarter and now trails by 12 points, 42-30. Brian Curran was huge for Juan Diego during that run as he scored seven of those 11 points.
5:32: Hurricane has responded nicely to Juan Diego's late third-quarter surge early on in the fourth. The Tigers have opened the final period with a quick 6-0 burst to lead 48-30 with less than six minutes to go.
4:30: Juan Diego is refusing to die. The Soaring Eagle just ripped off a quick 7-0 burst to make the score 48-37.
Final: Hurricane hangs on over what proved to be a somewhat tenuous final 10 minutes to post a solid quarterfinal victory. In the process, the Tigers earned a measure of revenge over Juan Diego, which beat the Tigers in heartbreaking manor in last fall's 3A championship football game. Hurricane will meet either Wasatch or Morgan in the semifinals at 7:30 on Friday.
