DJ Riffle scored 17 points and Colby Spencer added 16 as Valley upset tournament-favorite Layton Christian with the impressive first-round victory against Layton Christian. Valley won a play-in game against West Ridge the night before to officially qualify for the 16-team 1A field.
The Buffaloes led by seven entering the fourth quarter and pulled away late from the free throw line. They made 19 of 29 free throws compared to just 3 of 11 for Layton Christian.
