Final: Escalante star Tim Hughes fouled out with 3:37 remaining, but the Moquis showed they weren't just a one-man team and played fantastic defense down the stretch to win their second 1A title in as many seasons.
Third quarter: Duchesne began the third quarter on a 7-2 run to close within a point at 30-29, but Escalante went on a 10-0 run of its own at that point and didn't allow Duchesne another basket until Burt scored a put back with 16 seconds left. With eight minutes to play, Escalante leads, 40-31.
Halftime: To Duchesne's immense credit, the Eagles keeping making plays to stick around. Whenever Escalante has made a big basket or big play -- and that's happened fairly frequently in the first half -- the Eagles have responded to stay within touching distance. Kevin Griffin has 12 points for Escalante and Tim Hughes has nine. Marty Burt has nine points for Duchesne and Beau Browning has scored eight points.
First quarter: Through eight minutes, Escalante holds a four-point lead in this championship game. The Moquis looked solid and composed throughout the quarter and led 13-6 with less than a minute to play in the period. However, Mart Burt converted a three-point play for Duchesne to cut into that deficit.
Pregame: There's a steady stream of folks finding their seats inside the Sevier Valley Center, and we're just a few minutes away from the championship game of the 1A tournament.
