CEDAR CITY — The 29th annual Sterling Scholar Awards Program honoring high school students of the Southwest Utah region was held at Southern Utah University. One hundred sixty-nine students representing 16 high schools competed for awards and scholarships.
Winners and runners-up were honored for their excellence in scholarship, leadership, citizenship and community service.
Beaver, Bryce Valley, Canyon View, Cedar, Dixie, Enterprise, Escalante, Hurricane, Kanab, Panguitch, Parowan, Pine View, Snow Canyon, Tuacahn and Valley high schools were represented at the April 3 competition. The judges came from local communities, Dixie State College and SUU. Sixteen colleges and universities throughout the state offer opportunities for scholarships.
Art Challis of SUU conducted the program. SUU President Michael T. Benson welcomed the nominees and their guests.
Musical numbers were performed by Amy Elizabeth McDonald, Dixie High School; Hilary Heideman, Pine View High School; Lashel Terry, Enterprise High School; and Kimberly Anne Worwood, Hurricane High School. Awards were presented by Superintendent Ray Terry and Carolyn White, Beaver School District; Superintendent George Park and Williams A. Weppner, Garfield School District; Superintendent Robert Johnson and Lex Chamberlain, Kane School District; Superintendent Jim Johnson and Alan Adams, Iron School District; and Superintendent Max H. Rose and Wes Christiansen, Washington School District.
Prior to the awards program a banquet was held to honor the Southwest Utah Sterling Scholar finalists and their families. Jared Wilcken, associate director of admissions at SUU, was master of ceremonies. Benson was the guest speaker and encouraged the students to seek higher education and always strive to be their best.
The southwest program is one of four regional Sterling Scholar programs covering outlying areas of Utah. These regional programs are patterned after, although not directly administered by, the Deseret Morning News-KSL 5 Television program that was started in 1962 to recognize the accomplishments of high school students along the Wasatch Front.
