SLOC official Bruce Dworshak dies at age 48

By Lisa Riley Roche
Deseret News staff writer

Bruce Dworshak, 48, head of press operations for the 2002 Winter Games, has died after a long illness.
His job with the Salt Lake Organizing Committee was to make sure members of the media had what they needed to cover the Olympics. He was responsible for setting up the Main Media Center in the Salt Palace.
Dworshak shunned the spotlight during a career that included handling media logistics for the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles and the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta, as well as other major sporting events.
"When things went right, nobody heard from us. That's the way he liked it," Steve Dittmore, SLOC's venue press service manager, said.
He was happiest watching the Games on television from his office inside the Salt Palace "and seeing that things went really well," Dittmore said. Dworshak, who was hired by SLOC in mid-1998, "was a consummate professional in everything he did."
SLOC President Mitt Romney called Dworshak "an integral part of the 2002 Games" in a statement issued from Massachusetts, where he is running for governor. "He'll be missed," Romney said.
Dworshak was scheduled to go to Korea to help with preparations for the upcoming World Cup soccer tournament, which he also helped organize in 1994 and 1999. He also served as a member of the International Olympic Committee's press commission.
The cause of Dworshak's death on Tuesday was not immediately disclosed. Services will be held in Los Angeles, where he lived and worked for Perelman, Pioneer & Co., a public-relations firm.
