Taking Down the Olympics

Sandra Yi
KSL-TV

The Winter Games may be over this weekend. But remember, the Paralympics start on March 7th, so some of the Olympic stuff will stick around for another month. And as it all starts coming down, you can get even a good deal on a TV.

If you're interested in buying one of the used tv's, call or visit TV Specialists, Inc. at 180 E. 2100 South, 486-5757
"A whole host of the look of the games will leave after the Closing Ceremonies finishes," says Scott Givens, managing director of Creative Group.
Already, the Giant Slalom run in Park City is coming down. In downtown Salt Lake, Olympic Square - which has been a popular entertainment venue - will shut down Sunday evening. The roads will be cleared in a couple of days.
One of the stands at the Medals Plaza will also come down, but the rest will stay in place for the Paralympics. And after Closing Ceremonies, it will be lights out for the Olympic cityscape and rings. The lights will turn back on for the Paralympics.
The Salt Lake Organizing Committee says people can also expect to see the large gateway towers that stand in front of some venues, at least for a little while.
"It's been an awesome ride," Givens says. "So amazing to see so many people come together and have a great time. Downtown has been alive with energy. We couldn't have hoped for more."
Meanwhile, some of the equipment at those venues, like tv's, sound systems and projectors, will go to the highest bidder. Others will be sold to consumers at a lower cost.
Jerry Bollinger of T.V. Specialists, Inc. says, "It was used two to three weeks, and now we're just selling it below dealer cost, about 20 percent, to move it out."
For example, a 36 inch tv retailing at $799 now has a price tag of $599. So far, a quarter or third of the stuff has been sold.
The TV Specialists bought a million dollars worth of equipment, then rented it out to SLOC and the IOC for the Olympics.
Now that the Games are almost over, they hope to get rid of it.
"Just wish me luck on the takedown," Bollinger says. "That starts Monday."

Most of the equipment being sold will come in its original box with the owners manual and manufacturer's warranty - a pretty good deal. If you're interested, call or visit TV Specialists, Inc. at 180 E. 2100 South, 486-5757.
One more note... the Cauldron at Rice-Eccles Stadium and the Hero's Cauldron at the Medals Plaza are here for good. SLOC says they will become some type of water feature.
