Saturday it was just the first wave--what the staff at the airport call the calm before the storm. News Specialist Richard Piatt reports.
It's still busy, but just a sample of what's in store in the next few days, when Salt Lake International Airport expects to set new air- and people-traffic records.
That means more luggage checked in, more carry-ons going through security, more traffic dropping people off. The bottom line:
"You just can't arrive 30 to 40 minutes before your departure time and think you're going to make it, because you won't," says Tim Campbell with the Salt Lake City Department of Airports.
Such warnings are already having an affect on JoJo Jacobs. She got here two and a half hours early.
She's not the only one trying to avoid an airport panic attack.
"We saw a line last Saturday that scared us to death," says Van Chandler of Austin, Texas. "So we decided to come in a bit early."
"A lot of the group I'm travelling with are going to arrive three to four hours early on Monday, because it's going to be especially heavy, I believe," Jacobs says.
As busy as it seems this weekend, airport officials say it's nothing like what they're expecting on Monday-- their busiest travel day ever, where travellers are advised to arrive at least three hours before their scheduled flight.
Airport officials say nearly every Monday flight is 100 percent booked, and in some cases extra flights have been added to accomodate travelers.
